Previous years I’ve been meticulous about trimming lower leaves, pinching suckers, etc. This year? Just let them go crazy and I’ve never had happier plants. 6 plants total in that box (3 sungold, 1 Roma, 1 brandywine, 1 early girl)

Yes, I’m doing that for the first time as well!

Wish you luck! Are you providing any support for the growth? Please circle back in a few weeks with how the wild growth is going.

The way I see it and this is a tip I got from a pro if you feed and water and space plants at least 3 feet apart . I dug my holes 3 feet deep 2 feet in diameter amended the native soil with compost and cow manure with tomato tone fertilizer and boom huge 6 feet tall plants just prune the bottom 6 inches maybe determinate tomatoes like to be pruned idk but mine look the same as yours in zone 7a

Also the tomatoes like to be shaded as to avoid sun scald

They look awesome. I’ve never trimmed. I allow 6 sq ft/plant and I have tons of tomatoes.

I’m also doing a “no pinching suckers” year and eager to see the results.
My tomato plants are already spreading like crazy. Not sure how I’m going to control them lol.

  7. I tried no pinch but now they’re 4 ft and I started pinching and removing leaves from the center. There’s already almost 4-6 leaders per plant. I’m just super worried about late blight. It’s all around where I am and once it hits it’s deadly

I’m happy that you discovered that pinching suckers is for suckers. (I don’t really mean that, but it sounded catchy.)

I guess I’ll be the first one to point out that I see a ton of leaves but only three tomatoes. I’m sure there are some hidden in all those bushes. Understanding that there are many variables involved, it would be more useful to know how many more tomatoes you have this year vs this time last year since I don’t have the experience to know the best methods.

I decided not to remove suckers or lower leaves starting last summer, and I had the best tomato harvest I’ve ever had. Doing the same this year.

I would have left all of mine but I started later in the season so I’m just trying to get some tomatoes lol

I have a row of cherry tomatoes I haven’t pruned save the bottom foot of foliage to improve airflow and they’re all reaching upwards of 4ft in each direction completely took over the 42″ cages.. I should have given them more space lol
