Hi everyone (who has tried planting dill)
Can i ask for your help with Dill germination and transplanting? Ive been trying to plant herbs indoors and started with dill as i thought it would be easy… But apparently not so!
Background is:
I planted some seeds in a shallow (1 to 2cm container) for germination using compost seed growing medium.
I compacted soil before sprinkling seed and lightly covered with soil, then i used a mister to try to keep soil wet or as moist as possible.
Out of 30 to 40 seeds, After day 7 i had one seedling emerge, and after day 12 i had 2 emerge. But the first seedling had shrunk and fell over.
It could be i tried to overwater after the first shoot emerged to encourage more shoots… Which made the first one topple over… the first week or so i did not really make the seed bed soak with water so i thot more moisture means better germination
Note: i live in a semi tropical climate temp at 26 to 32 degrees now, quite humid indoors.
Anyway would any dill experts have any suggestions what to do next? Should i just keep moderately misting the soil? Or do i just keep over spraying? Im afraid ill kill the two shoots or damage other potential shoots. When should i transplant? Now or wait until they grow taller? Because they seem so frail
Also would anyone have suggestions about the other seeds? I heard they should sprout in 7 to 14 days but its day 12 already and nothing except the three… So thats why i overwaterd last few days which seemed to have worked to get the two shoots?
Anyway pls see a few pics i have to get an idea. The soil is in a semi watered condition as i was afraid to water more. I sprayes just enough to brown it. But earliee i had put double or triple the water so it is kind of semi packed.
Pics below:
[one alive seedling sprouted day 12, with day 7 wilted sprout being the white line on the left](https://i.imgur.com/Gf4j74J.jpg)
[Second seedling which just emerged today day 12](https://i.imgur.com/sEYB2gE.jpg)
Note: the first pic looks like how shoot #1 looked like.. the seed can be seen on top. But the second pic didmt have the seed on top amd actually looks like beginnings of a dill leaf? Could it be that the seedling in first pic grew upside down? Or that actually what i see are the roots? Meaning maybe top cover should be heavier?
Thanks so much everyone for your help!
