Tuscany is the Italian region with the highest rate of quality extra virgin olive oil in Italy according to the principles of Slow Food, followed, equally, by Lazio and Marche, and by Abruzzo and Umbria. This is what we get from reading the 2025 Guide to Extra Virgin Olive Oils which has The Snail symbol was awarded to 47 olive oil companies in 17 regions, for their ability to interpret the organoleptic, territorial and environmental values according to the Slow Food philosophy. The Guide offers a complete and detailed overview of Italy’s oil production. In the 2025 edition, 823 realities are described, including oil mills, agricultural companies and oil mills (127 new products compared to last year, demonstrating a very lively sector), 1321 oils reviewed out of over 1600 tasted.

The Guide to Extra Virgin Olive Oils was presented during an event held at the Teatro Filarmonici in Ascoli Piceno, a particularly significant edition, organized by Slow Food Italy: si in fact they are celebrating 25 years since their first publication of a fundamental tool for telling stories of oil, territories, producers who make olive growing an identifying and distinctive element of the Italian gastronomic and landscape heritage.

The prices: the Snail indicates the companies (47) that stand out for the way in which they interpret the production values (organoleptic, territorial and environmental) in harmony with the Slow Food philosophy; the Great Oil (89) is awarded to the extra virgin oils that have distinguished themselves for particular qualities from the organoleptic point of view and because they well reflect the territory and cultivar. To these characteristics, The Grande Olio Slow award (143) adds the recognition dedicated to the sustainable agronomic practices applied. The Guide also tries to be an invitation to visit these realities to meet the producers and discover the olive-growing heritage: for this reason it reports the companies that offer catering (120) and those with the possibility of overnight accommodation (191).

The 2024 olive oil year recorded a 32% drop in production (ISMEA data), but also a widespread qualitative improvement

«The 2024 olive oil year recorded a 32% drop in production (ISMEA data), but also a widespread qualitative improvement, as demonstrated by the over 830 companies reviewed in the new Guide, with many young people choosing organic agronomic practices – said Francesca Baldereschi, curator of the Guide –. A large participation that includes numerous new entries, highlighting not only the expansion of the sector, but also the growing awareness on the part of producers, who focus on quality and sustainable innovation. The Guide to Extra Virgin Olive Oils does not only guarantee a compass to orient oneself among the excellences of the sector, but represents a concrete commitment alongside these olive growers who, with passion and expertise, safeguard the Italian olive heritage by creating extra virgin olive oils of the highest quality. It is thanks to their choices in the field that landscapes are preserved and soils are regenerated
