These are The Republic readers’ favorite foods in metro Phoenix

Readers have voted on the best burrito, taco, burger and french fries in metro Phoenix over the years. Here are the winners.

The second Friday in July, this year July 11, is National French Fry Day. While the holiday is little more than a marketing ploy, we’ll take any excuse we can get to enjoy fried spuds. Here in metro Phoenix, we have a few that stand out from the rest, from a readers’ choice favorite to essential restaurants known for their gourmet takes on the humble dish.

And as a bonus, there’s a particularly lavish french fry dish that’s worth traveling for.

For those who celebrate, and those who don’t, here’s where to get some of the best french fries in metro Phoenix and beyond.

Der Wurst Hot Dogs fries with curry ketchup

In 2024, we received thousands of votes during our French Fry Face Off, and over half of them were for Der Wurst Hot Dogs hand-cut french fries with curry ketchup. Der Wurst Hot Dogs is open seven days a week inside Linger Longer Lounge in Phoenix. The french fries with curry ketchup are $8.

J&G Steakhouse black truffle fries

The J&G Black Truffle French Fries received a mention in Forbes for their fries tossed in truffle oil and truffle salt, dusted with Parmigiano Reggiano and served with two house-made sauces: black garlic aioli and truffle ketchup.

It’s a double truffle situation that is best washed down with a glass of champagne.

Arizona Wilderness wilderfries

We love sitting outside on the covered patio space with a beer and a heaping pile of the wilderfries — fried in duck fat and seasoned with rosemary and thyme — and watching the people meandering up and down Roosevelt Row. The fries alone were enough to land this brew pub on our 2025 essential restaurants list.

The fries at Atria are worth traveling for

This selection isn’t in metro Phoenix, but the folks at Forbes got it right when they called out Atria’s gourmet twist on steak frites for being one of the most inventive. Served with beef tartare that’s flavored with wild garlic, Calabrian chili, dashi and covered in melted gruyere cheese, this is one fancy dip for fried potatoes.
