Overall Score: 82/100

Deliciously flaky with well-defined layers, this golden-brown croissant has a light buttery aroma, with a slightly sweet hint. We thoroughly enjoyed the richness from the butter and its well-balanced sweetness. It has that signature soft but crisp outer layer with a rich chewy body.

BUY NOW Sainsbury’s, £2.00 for 4 croissants.

2Pret a Manger French Butter CroissantCroissant, Food, Curry puff, Dish, Cuisine, Ingredient, Pastry, Baked goods, Viennoiserie, Pastizz, pr

Overall Score: 80/100

Crisp with lots of flaky layers and a beautifully golden, well risen bake. We were enticed by its buttery notes with a gentle salty and sweet aroma. Balanced in taste, the combination of butter, salt and a hint of sweetness is pleasant. Some testers found the interior a little too dense for their liking.

In-store only, £1.40 for 1 croissant.

3Waitrose 1 Croissants Au Beurre De CharentesCroissant, Food, Dish, Cuisine, Snack, Ingredient, Fried food, Baked goods, Buttery, Viennoiserie, pr

Overall Score: 80/100

Crisp, golden pastry with a fresh and buttery aroma. The delicate flaky buttery layers melt in the mouth whilst the texture remains light but slightly doughy. Testers weren’t impressed with its overly delicate structure and found it a little bit drying in the middle.

BUY NOW Waitrose, £1.55 for 2 croissants.

4Co-op Irresistible 4 All Butter CroissantsFood, Cuisine, Dish, Snack, Biscuit, Cookie, Baked goods, Ingredient, Dessert, Cookies and crackers, pr

Overall Score: 78/100

Nicely golden with a slight gloss on top, we enjoyed the gentle sweet buttery aroma. However, while the sweetness comes out in the taste, the buttery richness is lost. While a little dry in texture, we loved its desirably flaky exterior.

In-store only, Co-op, £2.70 for 4 croissants.

5M&S – All Butter CroissantCroissant, Viennoiserie, Food, Cuisine, Dish, Sfogliatelle, Pastry, Baked goods, pr

Overall Score: 76/100

Large and impressive in size, the glossy layers have a buttery, bready aroma reminding our panel of a bakery. Testers enjoyed the balanced sweetness and buttery richness, whilst the flaky pastry was warmly welcomed. Although the exterior was crisp and soft, some found the inside a bit claggy and doughy.

In-store only, M&S, £0.90 for 1 croissant.

6Paul – CroissantCroissant, Food, Dish, Viennoiserie, Cuisine, Baked goods, Ingredient, Pastry, Turnover, Kifli, Giles Christopher

Overall Score: 75/100

A freshly baked aroma with a shiny and crisp exterior. Some found the aroma slightly more savoury than sweet but with a lovely buttery note to it. A hint of salt, we enjoyed the buttery flavour but was let down by the firm, crispy texture.

In-store only, Paul, £1.75 for 1 croissant.

7Benugo – CroissantDish, Food, Croissant, Cuisine, Baked goods, Ingredient, Pastry, Puff pastry, Pasty, Dessert, pr

Overall Score: 75/100

Doughy and buttery, with a slight overcooked aroma. Our testers found it flavourful with a nice buttery taste, but the texture let it down, being very soft and chewy in the middle. We also hoped for more flakiness in the texture but did enjoy its well-defined layers.

In-store only: Eat In £1.70 / Take Out £1.40

Overall Score: 74/100

Fresh and buttery in aroma, this croissant has a slightly sweet and gentle butteriness to it. The deep golden colour has mild bitter notes. However, the texture varied from croissant to croissant, some were lovely and light while others were disappointedly dense and drying.

9Eat – All Butter CroissantsCroissant, Food, Viennoiserie, Dish, Baked goods, Cuisine, Kifli, Bread, Pastry, Ingredient, pr

Overall Score: 73/100

Grand in size with a very crisp, slightly overbaked appearance. The buttery, fresh smelling pastry is balanced with a hint of sweetness. Incredibly flaky but disappointedly bitter tasting with an overly crispy quality.

In-store only, from £1.40 for 1 croissant.

10Sainsbury’s – Fresh CroissantCroissant, Food, Cuisine, Viennoiserie, Dish, Baked goods, Kifli, Bread, Baguette, Pastry, pr

Overall Score: 72/100

Fresh and buttery aroma that comes through in the taste. Subtly sweet, however the croissant is too soft with an overly doughy texture, but it has a nice flaky exterior.
