So, I guess I’m an idiot. I’ve had my egg for 13 years, and once a year l, after smoking something, I open the vents and let it burn out the rest of the charcoal, clearing away all the buildup that happens over time.

That said, I did it tonight, came to check on it after falling asleep on the couch, and my table was slowly burning. Oof. I know I should have kept an eye on it, but I just never thought it would get hot enough to ignite the table through the ceramic. Lesson learned, I guess. Maybe I should start looking for a new table too.

Yeah I’ve had mine crack marble and other things. You need the stand. They have a table stand that works great. I’m sure you know this by now lol

  2. I had that happen years ago and had to build a new cart. Now the Egg sits on a large silicone baking mat (roughly 12×17″) between it and the wood.

Thanks – this is a very important issue that not everyone is aware of. The stand/table can combust, and so can adjacent structures such as overhangs, house walls, etc. Eggs get hot!

This happened to me and almost burned my house down. It ignited in the middle of the night, several hours after a cook. Got very lucky. That was the end of wooden tables for me

Did the same thing to my table during a clean burn. Metal table for me now.

Yikes! I just coughed up for a BGE branded wooden table for my XL. Definitely will be watching closely to keep the air gap even around the egg and the slats. Thanks for the warning.

Was there no air gap between the egg and the wood? Or did it somehow ignite even with an air gap?

  8. Jesus. I do what you did at the end of every cook and my setup (xl with bge acacia table) does have some slight charring inside the ring where the table goes around the Egg. I always figured since they sold it, it would be fine.
