I have to admit, I wasn’t sure how to categorized today’s Coca Cola Chicken Sandwich. I found the recipe on RecipeCircus.com an eternity ago but there’s no real origin story. So here we are. I was also a bit skeptical as it calls for chicken breast to be marinated in a combo of Coca Cola and other seasonings for 2-3 days.

Welcome to Sandwiches of History. Today we’re making a sandwich of our history? Recent history? I’m not 100% sure I found this recipe a while back on RecipeCircus.com, and it sounds interesting. I want to try it. So, let’s make the Coca-Cola Chicken Sandwich. Now, to make this, gotta make it marinade and marinate the chicken for 2 to 3 days. I’m scaling the recipe down. But I do have to use half a can of Coca-Cola, minced ginger and Chinese five spice. Get that kind of mixed together. Then in goes 1 pound of chicken breasts. See you in a couple of days. Alright, so I drained the chicken, pounded it flat so that it’d cook evenly. And now we are to grill up the chicken. I really expected the Coke to kind of eat away at the meat, but doesn’t seem like it. So it says to serve with honey mustard. So I’m going to put that on one slice of bread and didn’t specify the bread. I know, I’m using a white sandwich bread bun probably would have been better. But you know, I got things to do. And on the other side, mayonnaise Then on our grilled chicken and lettuce. Okay, let’s give this Coca-Cola Chicken Sandwich a go. The chicken is slightly flavored by the Coke. You can taste a little bit of the ginger, and you can definitely taste the Chinese Five Spice. Now, I would have thought that they would have called for hot mustard, but the honey mustard is working really well with the chicken and the flavor on the chicken. I do want to plus it up a little though I’m gonna add some chopped scallion greens. Okay, let’s give this Coca-Cola Chicken Sandwich, plussed up with chopped scallion greens, a go. Nice, now we have a nice subtle oniony flavor. It goes really well with the five spice. goes really well with the chicken and the honey mustard. I definitely think that would have been better on a sesame seed bun. But hey, I don’t have all the time in the world to go buy all the breads in the world. So here we are. The original Coca Cola Chicken Sandwich. It was tasty. I don’t know if it was worth the effort. You know, marinating it for two days, but it was pretty tasty. I’m going to give it a I’ll give it a 6 1/2 maybe 7. Plussed up with the scallion greens, probably 7, 7 1/2. It’s tasty. I am going to finish it. I probably won’t make this again. Oh well, can’t all be home runs. Alright, See you tomorrow.

  1. I wonder how this concept would be with some changes to the spices… Maybe make a Coke and gochujang reduction instead. I might have to play with this.

  2. Great video! If you pound the chicken flat before marinating, you can cut the marinade time in half.

  3. I wonder if a dr. Pepper marinade would have worked. It seems like i have seen a few BBQ recipes that call for Dr. Pepper.
