New gardener here. How do you stop yourself from buying seeds and garden stuff every time you go to the store?

I have a spreadsheet of what seeds I have and how long they’ll last. When I go to buy seeds, I get just what I need seed of, unless it’s a new variety I want to test out.

You don’t. That said, I rarely ever buy seeds from nurseries, there are too many excellent options online.

Not to feed the addiction but MIGardener is 25% off seeds right now, meaning only 1.50 a pop and they’re excellent quality…

You’ll realize your not planting some of what you buy, then you start just buying what you plant

The library is my nemesis with free seeds I’ve never heard of. It’s also a big savior to my wallet.

GREAT question. Please let us know when you figure it out. . .

After my first few seasons i save all my seeds now dry then seal them up and store in a wooden airtight box under my bed only seed I buy are new flowers I haven’t grown or if something unique catches my eye

I think the only seeds that you can’t keep for years are alliums. Their germination rates decline pretty quickly

I plan my next year’s layout this year so I know if I actually need anything. It’s fun to have interesting seeds, but if you’re not actually going to plant them they will eventually stop being viable so it’s not even a fun ‘investment’. It’s also annoying to organize what you want to plant if you have too many options. So now I only have a minimum.

Alternatively don’t go to the store lol.

I don’t. I can explain why I need it all!

You don’t. Before you know it, you’ll be drying your own seeds from your fav breeds

I only get seeds from libraries (for free) so I never spend money on my seeds anymore. I even donate spare seeds

I either don’t go in the store or I don’t go near the gardening section. But if I do go near the gardening section I’m probably coming out with seeds or dirt. Or both.

The trick is to make the garden so big, you can’t ever leave.

You dont. You just keep buying, especially when sales are on. Im a true seed hoarded with a baseball card organizer system for seeds. Its the only thing I organize 🤣

I started w burpees, but now I just harvest seeds from fresh produce, or trade w others. My best Burpees yields were the snap peas. Didn’t like their cucumber (tough skin).

My library has a seed garden! So haven’t had the need to buy seeds besides cat grass for my cat

For an extra great time, check out r/seedswap

I remind myself that I have everything I need for this year, but maybe I can buy it next year.

At this point, please look up how to organize your seed collection. I think it more helpful than trying to stop buy seeds.

When you have all the seeds you could possibly want or need is when you won’t be tempted… So to stop the affliction … buy more seeds

Eventually, you learn what works best for your garden, and just restock your reliables when you need to.

  22. Longjumping_Baby_955

You don’t! Hope that helps ❤️

  23. Grouchy_Ad_3705

    That’s a question, I should know this one…… uh

  24. ErieOfOz

My lovley wife lady gives me the how many seeds do you already have look and that helps a little.

  25. The planting season is rapidly drawing to a close in our zone 6a, so there’s that. I just went out last night to get more carrots and peas (65 day crop) and planted them today, but that’s about it for this year.

  26. Krickett72

I literally just ordered $20 worth of seeds yesterday. I just needed 1 packet.

Realize you have no more space. I am in maintenance mode now. Swap out dead perennials, buy a set number of annuals each year, as seeds or seedlings.

  28. Sweet_Check_2075

I think you are putting this in the wrong group. None of us can control ourselves 😂

I usually order “the better” and more expensive fancy varieties online. Costs more that way, and I can still fill in the blanks with some cheapies from the store at times.

Every year, I check to see that I don’t really need to order any seeds, except a few of the varieties I’ve had the best luck with. I order those, Then I see something else I should try and put in another order. Repeat several times until it’s mid summer and I’ve filled every nook and cranny with five varieties of everything.

TLDR: I shop online first, then in stores, and don’t keep myself from buying anything.

  30. Fragrant_Actuary_596

I go get them free from the library seed bank

By not going “teehee I am so bad, I overspend on my hobby” and practicing some adult restraint. It’s fun to treat yourself a little here and there, but if a kid absolutely had to get a toy every time they were at a store, you wouldn’t laugh about it, so why be the same?

  32. RainbowSnapdragons

You find an online supplier you like and buy from them instead!

And still end up coming home with a pack or two from the store. 😅

  33. Tough_Pipe_4102

You just keep buying. I found a local nursery and they have starters for cheap usually a 6 pk tray for $1.50-2.50 I always go for something other than plants but always ends up buying a few because it’s so cheap and they’re pretty. Also they have some unique pepper variety’s that I can’t find seeds for already started.
