For over 30 years, the Taste of Greece fundraiser has been hosted by Twelve Holy Apostles Orthodox Church. The event is held at Marshall School and raises money for the church by selling traditional Greek food.
The set-up includes an “express tent” outside the school with a limited menu for those wanting to quickly buy food. Otherwise, guests can go inside and enjoy a variety of Greek delicacies. This includes shish kebabs with marinated pork and vegetables, Greek sausage, gyros, spanakopita, souvlaki, Athenian Chicken, Greek Salad, pastichio, dolmades, Greek pastries, and more.
Volunteer Steve Patronas helped with the grilling outside on Saturday. He says the preparation for the annual event begins weeks in advance.
“On the baked side of things, we have a bakery inside. The folks who are baking start several weeks before, probably two months before, doing all the pastries,” explained Patronas. “The food starts probably about two weeks before the event. The skewering of the kebabs, the cutting of the vegetables. So yeah, it’s a well-oiled machine right now.”
Twelve Holy Apostles Priest Dustin Lyon enjoys meeting new people at the “Taste of Greece” each year.
“As I go around, as the priest, I get to go around just talking to different people, talking to our workers, just saying hello, touching base with them, or putting the shishkabobs together and catching up with them, those sorts of things,” said Fr. Lyons. “It still raises money for the church, but it’s also something we enjoy doing. Just enjoy being a part of the larger Duluth community, and people look forward to coming.”
If you missed out on Saturday’s event, the Taste of Greece will continue on Sunday from 11 am to 4 pm. More details about the food available for purchase can be found at this link.
