I’m from the south. Years ago I was dating a woman from the Midwest. She wanted to cook for each other as a sort of cultural exchange. I went first, made a big southern meal. Suddenly she didn’t want to cook for me anymore. The reason was Midwest food is like this.

I would make this for my family and then wonder why they didn’t eat it.

This would be fine if everything were better.
I know that sounds silly, but meat/beans/potato/cheese is a good start. But you definitely need a binder–everyone mentions cream of mushroom and it’s a good staple for these casseroles, but in this case I might suggest golden mushroom soup instead. Opt for shredded cheese instead of American slices (cheddar?) and you’re pretty much good to go.

Somebody liked it bc it’s half gone 🤣

Oh that makes my little Southern heart sad… so, so sad… gotta at least add onion powder, garlic powder, salt and pepper. Real chopped onions, freshly minced garlic, cream of mushroom soup, a little bit of Worcestershire sauce, and a little bit of season all would definitely be the best option. Maybe even some bell pepper just to add a little extra flavor, if you’re into bell pepper and some pepper jack cheese sprinkled on top. That’s usually how I do my tater tot casserole and it’s fab-u-lous! I got my inspiration for that version from the Monterey melt at Whataburger lol.

As a Wisconsinite the Kraft singles are my biggest red flag. Theres SO many better cheese options that could have made this dish somewhat enjoyable 😭
