I have these curved handy containers and are perfect for the rest of an onion, apple, avocado or any other curved food. These replace the need to use disposable plastic wrap that increases micro plastic leakages into food and the environment. Although these are plastic, I've had them over 5 years with no cracking, and if they do break, they're recyclable.

I wrap them in foil, stick them in the fridge and forget they’re there

Plastic stackable restaurant tubs/cups with lids. Cheap on amazon or can get a collection from takeout orders.

I dice the rest and freeze it. Easy throw in for anything you cook in a pot or pan.

Glass container. It usually keeps things for longer.

i just cut the rest and toss it in the freezer. usually i’ll precut like 4 onions and 2 green bell pepper and put them in a gallon sized freezer ziploc so i don’t have to cut them every time i cook lol. it does kinda mellow out the flavor a bit but other than that they’re the same as when they’re fresh

Cling film, I keep a half a red onion on the go at all times for sandwiches, salads et al

  7. ficklepicklepacker

both halves were cut, so clearly you don’t have a uncut halve, so this question is complete bollocks

  8. Myghost_too

If you have half an onion, it has been cut (by definition). 😉

I store mine in a non-zip sandwich bag. A cut onion lasts me a couple weeks (wife hates onions), a reusable container would be ok, but the bag minimizes oxidation.

  9. Granny_knows_best

Supposedly, if you store the onion with the avocado, the avocado wont turn brown.

So the hack is using food storage containers to store food???

  11. Rough_Elk_3952

A ziplock. I use onion almost every day, it’s not going to go bad.

  12. xshap369

I just put them in Tupperware that can actually stack

  13. nofretting

i bypass the problem entirely by using an entire shallot.

  14. melvyn_flynn

glass containers from food I bought then cleaned🫙

  15. turtlerepresentative

    “curved containers” upside down tuberware?

  16. RD_Life_Enthusiast

LifeProTip: if you put a hunk of onion in with the avocado, it’ll keep it from going brown.

  17. Mr_Flibbles_ESQ

I learnt a long time ago that it wasn’t worth me trying to save half of anything like an onion and just use it all 🤷🏻

  18. 5x5LemonLimeSlime

I just let the onion raw dog my fridge

  19. bosnianfreak2

I have never had leftover onion. Then again, I am from Balkan, we eat them like they are apples🤣

  20. traviall1

Put them in a cereal bowl with a plate on top. I only do this for onions, everything else gets processed (chopped/ marinated/ etc) and put in glass storage containers

  21. 13thmurder

I just throw it in the fridge with no protection, then cut a thin slice off the cut end when I’m ready to use it to get rid of any dirt/dry end.

  22. iceunelle

I put the remaining onion in a tupperware and chop off portions of it any time I cook something that needs some onion.

  23. SkellyboneZ

Just set it on the shelf. Do you let cut veggies sit for a week before using them?

  24. necessarysmartassery

None of the above, it’s diced and put into a slider bag in the freezer.

  25. Fyonella

I just pop it in the salad drawer because I’m going to use it for the next meal so it’ll sit for a few hours along with all the other cold vegetables that live (briefly) in my fridge. Briefly because I eat them.

  26. Ilike3dogs

I’ve never had half an onion. If there’s some onion leftover from burgers, I’ll cut up another onion and caramelize them thangs

  27. I use a half quart deli container, usually cut side down.

  28. asyouwish

    I cut it all.

I freeze what I don’t use, usually in a silicone bag.

  29. Conscious_Economy450

Half an onion should be put in a Cm od water in a bowl no cover

  30. RunningOutOfNames56

I just throw them away. I only use an onion maybe a few times a year. I know I’m never going to use that other half.

  31. ceecee_50

I use just a glass anchor hocking container with a lid. Onion, avocado (cut side down with a bit of olive oil,), tomato, even though I don’t like refrigerating tomatoes, peppers…

  32. Vibingcarefully

Hardly a hack—it’s called tupperware, cling wrap, silicone stuff.

Off reddit this kind of information is flowing for decades.

  33. TheHeianPrincess

Trick question, I just always use a full onion, extra veg never hurts!

  34. saintarthur

Wrap the cut part in a sheet of kitchen paper and put it in the fridge. It lasts for ages.

  35. wgbenicia

Oxygen is the enemy. Use very tightly wrapped cling film.
