Hello Reddit, I bought this plant in the supermarket marked as Carolina Reaper. The problem is that it resembles more the Habanero but I’m too scared to try it (heheh). Could you guys help me identify the mysterious pepper? Thanks

Obviously, I think the only way to find out is to eat an entire pepper and see.

Looks like a habanero to me, and not any particular varietal of habanero (like Scotch bonnet)

Chili pepper

Cut open a ripe one. If it smells fruity = habanero. If it doesn’t = reaper.

If not a red habanero, it could be a Congo Red. It’s hotter than habanero and has the more pungent flavor of trinidad peppers.
We had this one – it looks like bhoot jhalokia (ghost pepper) but it’s genetically modified version – not so spicy if you are indian – just stay away from the white vines inside it.

Just my personal opinion, they look like habanero to me.
Habaneros I was lucky to get for free last year off Marketplace.

I must point out that the Carolina reaper pepper was created by crossing ghost peppers with habanero peppers. Like any hybrid you can have a huge fluctuation of dominant traits. These definitely look like habaneros though. It could also have been cross pollinated. Do you have other peppers? Or it could have been cross pollinated at the nursery

In my experience reapers are a bit more craggly and evil looking. I’ve grown habaneros, scotch bonnets, ghost peppers, and my fair share of reapers.
These look like habs to me.
Edit: everyone is saying to at one, but what I would do is cut a small piece off, pop it in your mouth, chew it, and then you can either spit or swallow it. If it’s a habanero it will be hot but manageable. If it is something hotter you would probably know right away.
