Just got a green egg from a neighborhood friend and trying identify what needs fixed for proper function. It’s purchased in 2007 with a broken fire box , broken mesh draft door (see photo) and I have two holes at the bottom(see photo). I am going to replace the fire box but curious if the other two matter ? I’ve attached a few photos for feedback thank you anyone who can help !!

Who drilled holes in the base and why?! I’d fill those with refractory cement. The mesh isn’t the end of the world, as long as you can close it off fully. The fire box will likely still cook if the pieces are all there. Could hold them together with stainless wire and refractory cement. Fire ring in one piece?

Those holes in the bottom are curious. For sure fill those with refractor mortar, replace the fire box and draft door, burn it out and full send the obligatory pork butt first cook.

    Good luck

  3. In 15 years of egging, I’ve never, ever used the mesh draft door.

I bet the drilled holes get covered by the firebox and are there to sweep fine ash out (if the prev owner didn’t use a vacuum).

    Broken mesh doesn’t much matter

New gaskets around the chimney & the rims of the cap & base . New ash basket, new fire box/ring, new handle(?) , how’s the hinge overall? needs a nest or a table, new daisy wheel/chimney cap (I prefer the stainless steel aftermarket cap). Needs about $500+/- in refurbishment, but it’s waaaay cheaper than a new one
