MOORHEAD, Minn. (Valley News Live) – The Dorothy Day Food Pantry helps provide food to hundreds of households each week. Churches United, the non-profit that runs the food pantry, is asking the public for help with donations.

“We’re averaging 125 households per distribution day, so a total of 375 households a week,” said Pastor Devlyn Brooks, CEO, Churches United. “I stress households because that’s not people, so if you start to consider three, four, five people in a household, we’re impacting 1,500 people a week.”

Weekly, urgent needs at the pantry include meat, pasta, pasta sauce, cereal, and canned fruits and vegetables.

“We’re asking people to think about if, if you go to the grocery store and you notice the prices have increased, if you’re feeling inflation, imagine those families that we serve that are in most need, and what they must be feeling right now,” Brooks said.

On Monday, July 28, during a distribution check, Churches United put out a video on their Facebook page showing that donations were needed to help provide food.

“People have been responding, and our community has been really strong today,” Brooks said. “We have been getting a steady string of donations, which is really truly what helped us today. But I will tell you that on any given week, by the time you get here on Thursday and we’ve had three straight days of distribution, the shelves are empty.”

Those looking to donate food can do so during their hours of operation, which are: Tuesday from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m., Wednesday: 3 p.m. – 6 p.m., and Thursday: 12 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Another way to help is with a monetary donation, which Brooks says can go a long way with being able to purchase food.

“I will tell you that cash is really important,” Brooks said. “When we work with our providers such as Great Plains Food Bank, we can buy in bulk at really discounted volumes.”

The Dorothy Day Food Pantry is located at 1308 Main Ave.
