Is a hinge and the band a cheap purchase?

  1. If the pot is not cracked or damaged, you might have a winner.

I’m curious as to why the bands and hinge are missing.

Only if you are willing to wait a few weeks for the parts and have the chops to faff assembling and aligning all the bits. You must work pretty hard to break off or otherwise neglect a kamado that severely so there’s no telling what else the owner did to it. It should be free. I’d pass.

Yeah this is a good price. The band and hinge kits are little pricey but I’d the rest is in good shape it’s a good (not great) price.

I am not a terrible drive from Chicago and would sell you a pretty nice kj 2 classic with cast iron half moon, joetissarie and cover for 500. That thing is a wreck.

As long as it’s not cracked, absolutely

I’d be wary. It’s seemingly really hard to mess up the hinge and band enough for it to be “missing” but much easier to just eat and crack the ceramic.

If ceramic is in decent shape it seems like a decent deal. If they aren’t, then it’s not even close to worth it

*update* seller said the band and hinges were really rusted so he took them off? Offered $150 for it so we’ll see what he says

KJ lists a hinge for around $140 and bands for $99. I would assume that’s each. You’ll probably also need the short screw kit for $10 and the long screw kit for $30.

They also have another listing for a hinge at $319. They don’t have pics or descriptions for any of the hinges or bands but if I had to guess I’d say the. $319 is probably the whole hinge and band assembly

Keep In mind that if you don’t have the bands you probably don’t have the handle or side shelves since they mount to the bands

I’d say if all the ceramics are good this would be a good buy at $100-150 for someone wanting spare ceramics or replacing broken parts. Probably not worth it to try to make a grill out of.

For reference I paid $300 for a complete BJ1 with a broken but useable firebox and broken D&C rack BUT I also got $200 worth of accessories with it

I was recently shopping used Big Joes. I just missed a series 1 with the old style fire ring for $450. There were others for about $600. What you’re looking at isn’t a terrible deal, especially if you were looking to put it in a table since it doesn’t have side shelves.

I would probably still pass. I guess I’m getting to the point where I’m not willing to work quite that hard to save a couple bucks. After considering spending around $600+ used, I saw a BJ1 at Lowe’s for $1,100 and decided I would rather have the warranty and new style fire ring.

Plus I got it delivered for free instead of lugging it home.

Yeah if the ceramic is good then that’s a steal but others make a good point… how does this happen?

So investigate the cost of replacement parts. Labor should be easy.

Missing hinge means you can’t open it. The top weighs like 75 pounds.
