Hello there, after showing you the brush assembly the last time this time the portafilter cleaner is 95% finished.
You see here the first test of it and I have to say that I am more than happy. Excluding time this project didn’t cost me more than ~25€ and it took me an afternoon of engineering, ten days of waiting for the parts (also to verify the measurements from the datasheets) a night of 3D printing and a evening of smoothing, sanding and painting it 🙂
Original plan was to activate it with a inductive sensor in the lower case at the handle. Sadly I found out that A these sensors have a detecting range that varies on the cheaper ones, the brass of the portafilter isn’t as inductive as steel and that you can’t find sensors in this 8mm form factor that have a higher range than 3mm. The planned gap was 1.4mm… well yeah so the plan is now to unclude a button at the button part of the shell and combine it with a time controlled switch.

Very cool. Are you able to run it off a 12V power supply?
Really cool!
r/OddlyErotic Sorry, couldn’t resist
It still was dirty and just rising it and wiping it with a paper towel would have been better.
/remindme in 10days
… just get your butler to do it?
It’s normally the bottom of the porta filter that needs the cleaning here (for the non bottomless ones). The inside is just a tap water rinse and flush under the machine for me, no brushing. Might be due to only having light and medium roasts though.
Love the engineering fun in the project in any case, impressive under 25€.
Sorry man this is quite stupid and doesnt clean it that good. Just flush it using your own machine and you are done. Nice design, thats all.
I mean it looks like you’ve just smeared the oils everywhere.

Another product that ones doesn’t need that would take up space on the counter. It takes secs to clean a portafilter. There is a sucker out there for anything. If you can make $ from it why not.
Nice effort but looks not very practical imo . I like the puck drawer

Are you Tim the Tool man Taylor
Except its still dirty.
The dried extract will contaminated your next shot a lot more than a few grounds.
I would add something to wet it more…some little cloth bits in the brush.
You also have to clean the bottom of your basket. (Bottomless makes this a breeze)
I love the idea though. You’re onto something!
There’s a reason why coffee shops that try to semi-auto this have a plumbed in thing that blasts hot water into the PF.

Or you can wipe it off with a towel for faster, cleaner and less microplastic solution.
Ignore the haters OP; You had a cool idea and materialized it, that’s awesome especially for a day and 25 euro!!!
Thinking through ideas; as others have said this will loosen any remaining grounds that have got stuck, but won’t do much to clear out the oils or underside/interior of the filter.
Have you considered building it upside down over a drip tray? You could integrate a switch into the spindle and have it squirt some cleaning solution when activated like a soap dispenser – that would help get the oils ready for a quick flush from the group head making cleanup super convenient!
