We just spent two weeks eating our way through Sicily and this island is a paradise for seafood lovers and vegetarians alike. From crispy rice balls and sweet ricotta desserts to fresh pastas bursting of flavor, we found 10 dishes that are authentic, affordable, and absolutely unforgettable. Whether you’re planning a trip to Sicily or just love Mediterranean food, this list is for you. Let’s dive into the top 10 must try Sicilian foods. Andiamo! Number one, granita and brioche. Breakfast of champions, granita, mmm brioche from bambar here in Taormina. Oh it’s warm. So we have a peach and lemon and a raspberry and lemon. I’m gonna take some of yours first too. Looks pretty good. Let’s take a little taste. Oh my god. What you do is you take a little bit of the brioche and you take a little bit of the granita. Just smack it on there. Oh my god. Oh the peach. Okay peach and lemon are winning right here right now. The best lemons in the world are right here in Sicily. They’re so juicy. They’re so sweet. Sweet yet tangy. Just refreshing. Full of flavor. And then I have a pistacchio and lemon granita with the brioche. Take a piece of brioche and then you smear this granita on top. Perfect. Yeah this is this is good stuff. I think we’re gonna have more of this in Sicily. I already know. We have another granita. Fragola e limone. Italians do frozen treats very well. Number two, pasta alla norma. So this is the classic pasta alla norma. Yeah the shape this little shape this little corkscrew here just the sauce just folds into that so beautifully. Oh that is one of the best pastas I think I’ve ever had. Like I’m not even joking like the it’s a combination of the shape of the pasta and the sauce. There’s there’s no meat in there. It’s all eggplant and tomato. It’s just like that perfect sweet and tangy and just comforting. It’s just so freaking comforting. Wow. Pasta alla norma. Must get. It’s a must try dish. Wow. Number three, arancina and arancino. So we have a norma flavored arancina in palermo. It’s a feminine word. This is an arancina or plural arancine. Anyways it’s an orange-sized shape here. It’s piping hot. It’s got nice crunch on it. An arancina is essentially kind of a risotto that’s been turned into a ball and stuffed in the middle and then fried on the outside. Yeah this one the rice is so nice and fragrant. And such a good crunch on the on the outside here. This is a classic Sicilian comfort food here. Buonissimo. Got a little pistacchio arancino and in Catania here they say arancino after the fruit tree the orange fruit tree. It’s masculine versus palermo is arancina feminine or the orange. This is a pistacchio in mozzarella. All right it’s gooey. Oh yeah the rice is so different. I’d say the rice here is a little less al dente. It’s a little creamier. And there’s no saffron in the rice. But you have this wonderful pistacchio and cheesy goodness. Pistacchio here in Catania are famous. There’s even a region I think on the west side of Mount Etna where the pistachios are 90 euros per kilogram. So yeah they’re they’re some of the most prized nuts here on the island. Number four pasta condesarde. We’ve been almost two weeks in Sicily. We haven’t had the pasta condesarde and we’re gonna try it out here. So this has got sardines and then it’s got wild fennel red crumbs raisins pine nuts and a little bit of parsley looks on the top here. Let’s see and tomatoes. Mmm. You get the sardine notes by the way. But everything else kind of balances it out. Actually very comforting. You know the parts of sardines have that intense intense flavor. But the nuts and the raisins help balance it out and the sweetness of the tomatoes. And I like the shape of the pasta here. It’s almost kind of like a I think there’s yeah the sardines are kind of inside inside the noodle here. But yeah the fennel adds a nice freshness to it. Very good. Look at that. In italian, le scarpi. The shoes. Scarpi. Mmm. Number five. Try swordfish or pesce spada. So one of the staples here you’re seeing all over the place is the swordfish or pesce spada. All right let’s take a bite of this. The olive oil lemon and parsley and a little bit of salt and pepper. It’s all you need. It’s kind of like a kind of like the steak of the sea here. Pesce spada. Swordfish. I think it’s rolled with there’s some breadcrumbs. Yeah let’s cut one open. Let’s see what we got here. Oh yeah. Yeah it’s got bread crumbs and I think yeah raisins and some pine nuts. Yeah this is a very typical thing that the rolled swordfish but with the lemon. And the filling just kind of melts in your mouth. Number six. Aparativo. It’s aperitivo time here and we got a Campari spritz and an aperol spritz. Of course we have the bruschetta. This one looks like it’s got some onion mixed in as well. That’s some basil. Oh wow. That’s definitely, that’s not rustic. That is a fine, that’s a fine bruschetta. The olive oil changed the quality of the olive oil. So good. All right this is called the rustic Sicilian platter here. So we got a little provolone, pickled onions and olives on this bread here. Yeah the onions are so sweet and pickled. Oh the olive is so good. Number seven. Caponata. A little bit of the caponata here. A little eggplant, eggplant dip. It’s got all kinds of onions and tomato and celery. Mmm whoa that is excellent. But yeah sweet, savory, onions, melts in your mouth, olive oil. Sicilian caponata. Doesn’t get better than that. Number eight. Zupa de cose. Let’s give one of these mussels a try. It’s got like a nice tomato, garlic, parsley sauce. There’s nowhere to describe that. It’s just heaven by it. It’s the freshest mussels I’ve had to date. Well yeah this is a winner, this is a winner. Number nine. Couscous a la Dravenize. We got a fish couscous. I think it’s got some Tunisian names from our serving there. We got some tomato sauce. Number ten. Canole. And obviously Sicily is known for its canole. This is a big canolo right? Crispy shell, creamy ricotta. The secret? It should be filled fresh, never pre-made. Okay this is a heavy canolo. Look at that, they just filled it up with the ricotta. Oh my god. Mama mia. That’s delicious. You taste the lemon in the ricotta cheese, but it tastes so fresh. This ricotta cheese is so so fresh. If you come to Sicily, you have to have the canola. This is going to be addicting. This is going to be very addicting. I have not had a canolo. This is like, this is the best canoli of my life to date. We’ll see if we can top it. My favorite. This is now the canoli to beat. We’ll see if Taormina can do it, but this is this is this is very good. This is this is number one. Number one canoli here. And that’s our list of the 10 must try Sicilian dishes. From creamy ricotta to zesty citrus, Sicily is a flavor packed blend of cultures. Arab, Greek, Spanish, and Italian, all on one beautiful island.
