
Saw this pic floating around on the internet (not mine, obviously, you can see the watermark), but it got me curious as I've been noticing a lot of people adding grilled onions to their steaks lately. Is this a legit thing or just personal preference?

Better with mid-tier, lower-flavor or mediocre cuts. Example, would be great with an average cap-off top sirloin, but am not going to do a prime rib eye like that.

I load my steak up with a shit ton of fried mushrooms and onions. That’s just me though. I’m sure a lot of people do.

While it’s not necessary, I think caramelized or semi caramelized onions do add something. I like to do caramelized onions and mushrooms and put them on the side. Also next day all you need is some kind of mayo based sauce and you have a banging steak sandwich if leftovers exist. A few times I’ve just made the steak sandwich with fresh steak because it was so good.
Not for me, but I never judge people on what they like lol.
I’m of the opinion that salt and sometimes pepper are the only things that belong on a steak. Unless it sucks.

I like to do that with most meats! We generally cook lamb or pork chops and fry some onions in the leftover oil to grab all the flavours from it! I do that with steaks too as it’s resting. Adds a lot of flavour to if you eat it with baked potatoes!
You want a good steak? Pull out some yellow onions and cremini (small portobello) mushrooms. Cut them up however you desire. I recommend strips for the onion, slices for the mushrooms. Little butter on the pan. Fry up and caramelize them. Set to side. **DO NOT CLEAN THE PAN.** Take some extra virgin olive oil and beef stock. Just a little bit. Dump in pan and bring up to the temperature you want to start cooking the steak at. Cook your steak on all sides. Get a crispy exterior. Typically, on a cast iron skillet, this will be 2-3 minutes a side at medium high.
Take steak out of the skillet onto your plate. Cracked black pepper and crushed sea salt on both sides. A light amount of melted butter, then caramelized onions and mushrooms on top. Let sit for 5 minutes.

Absolutely. Growing up, Sunday was always steak night and we’d top them with pan seared mushrooms and onions every fuckin time. Delicious.
Grilled onions with a steak is superb. I personally like white, red and large green onions grilled with sea salt and olive oil. I do this with different cuts, Tri Tip, Picanha, Ribeye, Skirt, Tomahawks.

My personal beliefs is that a good steak only needs salt and pepper.
Anything else is just trying to make a medicro steak better or palatable.
It depends on what kind of steak. I usually go mushrooms on a thicker steak. I’ll go with onions on skirt steak.

I’m not a fan of onions with anything. I know that is a minority opinion. I do like to fry a load of garlic cloves with my steak and especially in the butter baste makes them super tasty and I love those on my steak
