A North Yorkshire modern history museum has launched a campaign highlighting the resourcefulness of wartime cooking and the spirit of the 1940s Home Front.
Eden Camp’s Rations Reimagined campaign has partnered with chefs and restaurants to reimagine wartime recipes using ration-style ingredients, offering visitors a taste of history.
Paula Peace, director of Eden Camp, near Malton, said: “During wartime, food became a precious commodity.

“People struggled, but were ingenious with the ways in which they created as much as possible from a limited amount.
“With Rations Reimagined, we’re paying tribute to the sheer inventiveness of the 1940s and bringing history to life.”

The 200-year-old recipe was rediscovered in the Beverley archives in 2007.
Mr Mackenzie has adapted the original, which was strong in cloves and mace, to better suit modern tastes.
Adam Richardson, head chef at The Fox and Hounds Country Inn in Sinnington, has contributed two classic comfort dishes.
His corned beef hash uses simple pantry staples to create a filling meal, while his bread and butter pudding turns stale bread into a nostalgic dessert.
Visitors to Eden Camp can experience life on the Home Front and try their hand at wartime cooking.

The museum is offering a free return visit for anyone who buys advance tickets online between July 1 and August 31.
The offer is part of a summer programme of hands-on, history-themed activities for families.
Between August 4 and 17, the museum will explore how families adapted to rationing and shortages during the war.
Workshops will include making carrot lollipops and learning about parachute lingerie.
The Carrots on a Stick Workshop will run from August 6 to 10 and August 13 to 17, from 1pm to 2pm each day.
