I use charcoal, even if gas is faster, I’ll wait.

Lump charcoal is the only answer, all others are inferior.

Charcoal til I die. I’ll take a $50 Weber grill over a $500 gas grill any day of the week. Just tastes way better. Doesn’t make sense, but having propane around just makes me nervous. I know it’s fine, but still, always in the back of my mind that it’ll just blow up.

Charcoal all the way no fucking gas

Back when the Ford Model T was in production Henry ordered parts to be delivered in wood crates of very specific dimensions to be used as floorboard, window frames, pickup beds etc but had a lot of wood left over. Henry being the cheap guy that he was wanted to do something with all the waste wood so he. set up one of his son in laws in business with the last name of Kingsford and that’s why we have charcoal briquettes. He also had another son in law last name Firestone which Henry set up in the tire business. Not what you asked, just useless trivia the lives rent free in my head.

Gas because I want a fast solution for cooking dinner outside after work
Maybe in a billion years when I can afford to retire l I’ll consider charcoal / stick burner

Charcoal is my preferred fuel

looks good! i use cherry, hickory, apple, oak woods and only hickory/oak lump charcoal, no briquettes, and i wont eat gas cooked its gross. 😁
CapnChaos2024
Lump charcoal for grilling, briquettes for smoking, wood for using my Santa Maria grill.
Gas is fine for convenience, ever since I got divorced I left my gas grill with her and have been using exclusively charcoal and wood and surprisingly haven’t missed the convenience of having a gas grill at all

Depends. If I have some extra time, I like using my charcoal grill because of the flavor and I can always throw a wood chunk in there if I want some smoke, etc.
But, there are a lot of times when I use my gas grill. I have a natural gas grill so I never run out of propane and it’s just so easier to turn the knobs start it up, and I’m ready to go in 7-10 minutes. Not as messy at charcoal, etc.
So, as I said, in my case it depends.

I only use charcoal. I just prefer the specific taste it gives. Though the best steaks I ever had were prepared via propane.

Only wood for me, which I think is what OP means by “open flame”

Closed flame for me.

I waffle between them all. It’s a dance between what the meat is, how much time I have, how the weather is, my mood, patience, etc. Propane when I need to get it done fast. Lump charcoal when I have time and want an over-the-fire experience. Electric in a cast iron if I can’t be outside. My fav? Flame touched, be it sticks or charcoal (lump) directly on the meat. It’s primordially good.

The taste from charcoal is worth every drawback with it… and honestly after how common a chimney became, it’s hardly an issue. Chimney takes like 10 minutes to get going which is pretty much how long it takes for me to prep whatever meal I’m making.

100% charcoal here. I use of 50/50 mix of briquettes and lump. Chimney starter. Char broil CB940X grill that I keep garaged and roll it out when needed – love this grill and they do not make it anymore (after being on the market for nearly 50 years) so I take care of it.

I tell you hwhat. We cook with propane. Taste the meat, not the heat.
I’m kidding.
Always charcoal and wood – that’s the way things were done in my family / country ever since I was a little boy. One of my childhood memories is searching for firewood with my dad and his friend (who was the grill master) – damn, there were so many mosquitos.

I like everything open flames , too unpredictable.
