Now that they’re all ripened, time for my yearly taste rating. Blue Marzanos took the longest to break.

Veranda Red – 3/10 – worst of the dwarfs i have grown. Little taste for such small fruit. Gourmansun – 5/10 – nice sandwich tomato, good texture, but i hoped for more intense flavor. Blue Marzano – 3/10 – disappointing when eaten fresh. We’ll see how it compares when it goes to sauce. Sungold – 10/10 – No surprises. Nothing yet came close to flavor intensity of these little guys. Buffalosun – 4/10 – slightly less flavor than Gourmansun. Will go to sandwiches. Ruby Falls – 9/10 – Very nice acidic balance. Will go really well with steak and bbq. Paul Robeson – 8/10 – Very interesting smoky and rich flavor for a larger tomato. Very unique tasting. Should do well in burgers. Sofia Fire Comet – 7/10 – balanced sweet/tart and aromatic depth. Should go well into salads. Sgt Pepper Amber (peach) – 5/10 Was hoping for more but ok-ish for such large fruit.

Thanks for the review and beautiful photo with labels. I’m in Delaware in the US. Hot summers cold ish winters and sublime Spring and Fall. Excited to grow Paul Robeson next season for that great flavor profile. Oh, I grow outside in raised beds and in ground beds

What zone are you in? Doesn’t that matter some for how well they flavor?

Thanks! Interesting! Sungold seems to thrive so many places and to always be a hit in taste tests. It does well for you in a greenhouse in Ireland and for me, outdoors, in Texas. Long live Sungold!

Sungold never disappoints! So delicious. If you haven’t tried them yet, may I suggest Sungreen? They are my absolute favorite, both stunning and delicious!

I love tomatoes.

I usually grow the sun gold but this year grew Jelly Bean grape tomatoes instead (got the seeds in a seed swap). Although, I actually ended up with 2 volunteer sun gold plants as well so have both. I don’t eat raw tomatoes but my teenage daughter does. She is a tomato snob and has avoided the sun gold opting to eat only the Jelly Bean variety. She said they have a better texture and that they are sweet but not too sweet. She made it clear they are a new favorite and has already washed, dried, & stored seeds for use next summer.

Thanks for the ratings. I find flavour ratings really important when looking for what to try next. I don’t really care what it looks like.
