Out of all the hobbies my spouse has, sourdough is by far my fav. But the crusties all over the fridge were driving me insane! We finally came up with a solution… may I present starter jail!! Yes, it’s just a dedicated spot in the fridge for starter – nothing groundbreaking but it really works 🙂

You should get some of those orange fabric squares at Walmart and make a little orange jumpsuit for it.

Alternative solution: they could wipe the jar down occasionally. I use weck jars too and have never had this problem with any starter.

Or just use a small bowl under your jar… 🤔

Is that a Weck canning jar? If so, it seems like you have the lid sealed shut. I wouldn’t do this with a starter that you’re trying to keep alive because pressure will build during fermentation (small risk of breaking the glass) and also your starter needs a bit of air flow to live. Simple fix: remove the orange gasket and metal clips and just let the glass lid sit on the jar.

Why or how is this happening? At this point I’m sure he knows how much starter that jar holds. Why is he making more than can fit in there? Get a 2nd jar or a bigger one.

Play warden and get yo’ partner to start proofing and baking from that starter whenever you wish! 😝

There’s no reason for the outside of your jar to be dirty.
