I picked this guy up for free on Marketplace. Early 2000’s Ok Joe Longhorn, not as heavy as an original OK Joe but much better than the newer ones.

  • Used a steel cup brush attached to a cordless drill to remove rust
  • Replaced all of the fasteners
  • Soaked the spring handles in vinegar for 3 days to remove rust (it helped but I still may replace them eventually)
  • Degreased the inside with Zep Citrus degreaser
  • Power washed inside and out
  • Painted with Rustoleum high temp
  • Coated the inside with avocado oil spray and cooked it in for 4 hours. Can’t believe how well this worked.

I’ve refurbished, now it’s time to mod up.

  • Do gaskets really help that much? What about adding the clamps to the doors?
  • What has anyone tried for a DIY baffle? I know I can buy the premade ones for $100 and I haven’t seen a DIY solution that works for more than than 1-2 cooks

    Nice work!

Gaskets were a great mod for my old rig. If it leaks, then yes, you’ll see better performance. Actual noticeable in the taste? Meh, probs not. But it helps with airflow and temps.

If you really want to save those handles you use electrolysis to get the rust off. Just need a sacrificial piece of metal, borax, and a battery charger (not the tender).
