I've been hanging out here for the last couple of weeks or so and even tried out my first sardines – the cheapest I could find here in Germany (the store brand of Rewe).

Despite it being cheap, I must say, I'm thoroughly impressed by the taste and different varieties available. I ended up trying Herring, mackerel and of course, lots of deenz.

Today's dinner – Rosemary flavored rice, with eggs and a can of chilli-deenz. 11/10 would recommend, would definitely smash anytime of the day.

Before anyone jumps at me for the lack of fiber – I ate a mandarin and a banana after. I feel this is as close as it gets to a balanced meal. High protein, good amount of carbs and healthy fats. Thanks to y'all, your obsession with tinned fish has become a part of my diet and I could not be happier about it.

I was repulsed by the dog hair in the middle of your plate until I brushed it off my laptop screen.

WELCOME! Toss some frozen peas/carrots/corn in your rice at end and you’ve got it. I eat this exact meal once month.

  4. Rosemary and fish is a great combo. I’ve been eating deens with the rosemary and olive oil Triscuits lately and it’s so good lol.

Those eggs 10/10 mate, eggs and tinned fish is my true weakness.

It’s probably much better for you than a package of ramen soup

Do you just toss a sprig of fresh rosemary when cooking rice?

I toss a few seeds of black (smoked) cardamon into my rice but have not tried serving with sardines

  8. Add a packet of seaweed on the side, chef’s kiss!

Filipinos eat a similar dish, often for breakfast, although I eat it whenever – garlic fried rice and eggs with sardines. I fry my eggs but you’re making me want to try it this way! So good!

learning so many fantastic rice additives, cardamon pods, nori, spinach (the best leafy green), not dog hair

Oh hell yeah, rice and eggs and deens. Nice. I’m American, but my father was born and raised in Bielefeld, came here as a teen. I got my taste for deens from him and my grandparents (also from Bielefeld) as a child, so I assumed it was common in Germany, much like in Scandinavia. Some form of herring was at every family meal.
