Amid the loss, devastation and permanent displacement caused by the wildfires, going out for Valentine’s Day might be the last thing on your mind. But for those of us in more fortunate circumstances, dining out is one of the top ways to support locally owned small businesses. In the aftermath of the fires, many restaurants across L.A. County are struggling to survive, even as they’ve stepped up to feed displaced residents and first responders.

As of writing, there’s less than two weeks until the big holiday—and while that means in practice many places have already completely booked up, I’ve rounded up a few excellent last-minute choices that still have tables available, with reasons why you should book. Several of these restaurants are close to fire-affected areas, have employees who have been permanently displaced from their homes, or have rushed to feed our communities in a time of crisis. In each listing, I’ve noted my reasons for highlighting each spot.

From romantic hideaways to a handful of the city’s best restaurants, old favorites and newcomers alike, these L.A. restaurants will make your celebration of love feel truly special in one way or another—and if you find that your first choice is booked, you’re almost guaranteed to find another just-as-great spot on this list.
