Okay so I worked for this company in my city for about a year, just recently quit like 4 weeks ago after my boss decided that my wage was dependant on me working at minimum 100 hours bi-weekly, otherwise I was only gonna get paid 18$/hr (about 6$ less than it was and also less than most of my staff) to manage a giant commissary kitchen that supplies all 6 restaurants in our city.
This place was fucking disgusting, hands down nastiest place I've ever worked and right from day one i made it my mission to get things cleaner and more organized. In my first week I spent over 5 hours cleaning and organizing our warehouse freezer, the next week another 5-6 hours doing the dry storage and the following week, about 3.5 days totaling about 22 hours cleaning, organizing and tearing apart the shelving, washing everything, power washing the walls and floor of years of built up blood and mould in the walk in cooler . I took a month off work after losing my mother and when I came back, it was just as bad as when I had first started and I was expected to be okay with getting paid 1/3 less than I was a month prior for only working about 5-10 hours less a week..
Needless to say I started applying for a new job that day and after having to deal with the massive pay cut i found a great new position that I just started at 4 weeks ago now. I had some serious internal struggles at how this place continued to produce food for 6 restaurants plus a bunch of large Caterings knowing the filth that it all came from so I decided to contact the local health inspector and cited every health code violation that was present when I left and by this morning only about 36 hours after making the report, the inspector came into the kitchen and shut the place down. No production under any circumstances until all the issues were resolved.
Now mind you, I spent nearly a year trying to get these issues dealt with in house with my boss (no heat in winter, no air flow in summer, exhaust vents that don't even function, equipment broken down and virtually unusable, the list goes on.. but this guy would practically brag about having spent no money on repairs or maintenance presumably to keep his own bonus looking good.
Now, they will have to spend thousands, if not 10s of thousands getting all the repairs and cleaning done as well as hemorrhage money not being able to do production to supply the restaurants or any catering orders until the place is appropriate for food production and I have never been so satisfied in my 17 years in kitchen life that something was actually accomplished to put the screws to these higher up asshats that think it's acceptable to work their staff like dogs in disgusting conditions with garbage equipment and sanitation and virtually unbearable working conditions just to make a quick buck.
