Whenever a new movie or TV show about food comes out, there’s a good chance I’m going to watch it. But if it’s a movie about Italian grandmas — aka nonnas — working in a neighborhood joint for a restaurateur played by Vince Vaughn? Well, that’s a guaranteed viewing. Last weekend, I finally got around to watching Nonnas, which came out earlier this year, and it was an absolute joy. If you haven’t seen it yet, you should put it on your list ASAP.
The central thrill of Nonnas is watching these highly skilled women throw down in the kitchen. As a former restaurant cook and now professional kitchen shopping writer, it was awesome to see the nonnas’ tips, tricks, and cookware choices. And the moment I knew this film’s cooking was the real deal was when I watched Talia Shire grill a steak in a cast iron grill pan.

During a fun montage of the nonnas prepping some extremely enticing cuisine, Shire heats up a grill pan, tosses in a bunch of olive oil, smashed garlic, rosemary, and an absolutely stunning cut of steak. I wanted to dive into the screen. Fortunately, I’ve owned and cooked with a ton of awesome grill pans — they’re among my very favorite types of cookware. They’re incredibly versatile, letting you achieve deliciously smoky, charred flavors and gorgeous grill marks from the comfort of your kitchen. I wasn’t able to tell what brand they used, but it’s close enough to Lodge’s immensely popular 10.5-inch grill pan that I’m pretty confident telling you that if the food in this movie looked appealing to you, this $26 pan with over 24,400 five-star ratings on Amazon is the way to get there.
It was certainly appealing to Vaughn’s character, who was blown away by how good the steak was. “You have that beautifully seasoned garlic, but it’s right inside the steak. Where did you even learn to do that?” he asked. I won’t spoil the response. Whether you’re looking to make a steak that good, some grilled vegetables, hot dogs, burgers, or any other tasty dish you want hot off the grill without going outside, you must pick up this pan.
