It goes without saying that Japan and France have nailed desserts, and Mr Chu’s owner Daniel Chu is bringing the two together with Superbutter. Officially opening today, Superbutter is the latest name to join Burnside Village’s buzzing dining precinct roll-out, serving up brunch, lunch and dinner.

The name itself tells you everything you need to know. “‘Super’ means superior quality, and ‘butter’ is because whenever butter is needed, we’ll use the best,” Daniel explains. “We always make sure everything is top quality.”

In fact, Superbutter might be the first in Adelaide to let diners choose their butter. For any brunch dish where butter is involved, customers can select from three options — local favourite Pepe Saya, Will Studd 24-hour cream cultured butter, or French-style La Coviette.

“I haven’t seen anything like this in Adelaide before — and I think it’s pretty cool,” says Daniel. “Basically, if butter is involved, you can choose.”

The menu is a balance of sweet and savoury, with a strong Japanese and French influence. Daniel’s inspiration comes from a long-held love of Japanese culture — he travels there every year — and this marks the first time he’s brought that passion into a venue.

“You might see something like a French friand, but infused with Japanese flavours,” he says. “Then for lunch, one of the dishes is a cold prawn and udon noodle salad, which combines French and Japanese cooking techniques in one dish.”

Superbutter knows its way around what Adelaide’s Japanophiles love. Miso and yuzu are laced throughout the menu, and matcha devotees can prepare to be spoiled with a dedicated matcha section.

“Matcha is a big trend right now,” Daniel says. “We’ll have matcha pastries and cakes, brownies, matcha tiramisu, matcha cheesecake, matcha cookies, and more.”

Ona Coffee is behind the brews, with Superbutter pouring their award-winning Raspberry Candy beans. Everything, from pastries to cakes, is made in-house, and that’s at the heart of Superbutter.

“Superbutter came about because I wanted to do my own baking,” Daniel explains. “Before, I didn’t have the resources or space. The whole design is based on in-house baking and in-house cooking.”

Step into the cafe, and the wooden accents might just convince you that you’re in Japan. The interiors – designed by Faculty Design – follow the brief of “cosy.” “Like you’re enjoying a coffee at home,” says Daniel, with a neutral palette of browns and pale pink paired with timber framing and wooden benchtops.

Mr. Chu’s has become a Burnside favourite, and with its unique Japanese-French flavour and superior style, Superbutter will undoubtedly follow suit.

“I’m really looking forward to this one. Most locals have been coming to Burnside Village for years and I love interacting with the community, it’s just a nice atmosphere to be in,” says Daniel.
