ANAMOSA, Iowa (KCRG) – The American Heart Association is collaborating with HeartCorps and other community organizations to establish multiple small outdoor food pantries throughout Jones County.

HeartCorps and other community organizations are working towards addressing food insecurity particularly in rural Iowa.

The food pantries will increase access to nutritious and affordable food. It also benefits individuals who live in areas that lack nearby grocery stores.

Many families in rural Iowa struggle to access healthy food, often resulting in them having to rely on convenience stores or fast food.

“While food pantries and assistance programs help those in financial need, many others still struggle to maintain a healthy diet due to logistical challenges,” said Lisa Heitz, a HeartCorps member coordinating the project. “These outdoor pantries aim to bridge that gap by offering a convenient, community-supported solution.”

The outdoor food pantries were placed at the Martelle Public Library, Stanwood Public Library, and Fairfax Public Library. The pantries work on a simple but powerful principle of, “Take what you need, leave what you can.”

Additional food pantries are planned to launch at the Wregie Memorial Library, Clarence Public Library, Zion Lutheran Church in Wyoming and Lutheran Church in Olin.
