Give it a try! Scoopulator – an approachable ice cream calculator

It's been a couple months since I initially posted about this tool I'm building, and I was absolutely elated to hear about how many of you were finding it useful! Since then I've been spending some of my free time adding all the features that were requested, and getting the site to a place where I can start fully using it to build and organize my own recipes.

There were many, many updates, but I'll list some of them here:

  • Add and save custom ingredients (either by specifying all composition values, or in some cases I've added simple forms where you only need to specify e.g. the milk fat percentage and the tool estimates the rest)
  • Save recipes to your account
  • More intuitive "scoopability" gauge
  • Specify evaporation percentage
  • Rescale ingredients to a new total weight
  • A specific page to help with calculating PAC/FPDF
  • Start from popular base recipes like Underbelly and Salt and straw

There are still some things I'm working on:

  • Adding more "simple" custom ingredient forms to take the hassle out of adding new ingredients
  • Incorporating hardness factor into calculations for cocoa/nut ingredients
  • Better "at-a-glance" calculator UI so you don't have to keep scrolling down on mobile to see if you've hit your targets
  • More target profiles (and perhaps custom ones?)
  • Clean up the code and open-source it so others can contribute

I'm excited to hear more about how you're using it, how it's been helpful, and what could be improved!

    Will it only be in metric? It’s fine if it is but I wanted to know

    I miss “non-classic” or “light” target profiles regarding low-fat / low-sugar recipes. “High” has to be interpreted within that context.

    For your consideration, here’s my recipes clustered into 6 categories. Each cluster with a count of recipes, median fat, and median sugar. 61 recipes in total.

    * **Low Fat (LF)** (Fat <= 3.0g per 100g)
    * **LF, Low Sugar (LS)** (Sugar <= 5.0g per 100g): 23 recipes, **1.4g**, **3.3g**
    * **LF, High Sugar (HS)** (Sugar > 5.0g per 100g): 13 recipes, **1.6g**, **5.8g**
    * **Medium Fat (MF)** (Fat 3.1g to 6.0g per 100g)
    * **MF, Low Sugar (LS)** (Sugar <= 5.0g per 100g): 11 recipes, **4.7g**, **3.2g**
    * **MF, High Sugar (HS)** (Sugar > 5.0g per 100g): 6 recipes, **4.85g**, **6.95g**
    * **High Fat (HF)** (Fat > 6.0g per 100g)
    * **HF, Low Sugar (LS)** (Sugar <= 5.0g per 100g): 6 recipes, **7.05g**, **3.35g**
    * **HF, High Sugar (HS)** (Sugar > 5.0g per 100g): 2 recipes, **6.85g**, **7.45g**

    Targets I see from that are 2 / 5 / 7g for fat, and 3 / 7g for sugar.

    FYI, the EU labeling limits are 3g for low-fat and 5g for low-sugar.
