I might have missed out on this place entirely if not for u/NYEDMD and u/HeidiCharisse. And yes, this impending closure is confirmed: a sign on the front door announces it. What I overheard from staff chatting with other customers was that the family behind the place wasn't in a position to keep it going, at least partly due to lack of interest by their younger generation. They also mentioned that they don't get tourist volume, which is a damned shame because their food is objectively excellent. I wish I were more surprised, but sadly, this is something we've all seen play out with longstanding neighborhood establishments.
On my two previous visits, I got the Elephantburger, with its curried sour cream, and a breakfast dish of poached eggs with balsamic, tarragon, tomatoes, avocado, and shrooms. This time it was a grilled open-face sandwich of English cheddar with watercress, tomato, and dijon, on sourdough with that wonderful applewood bacon of theirs. I can highly recommend all.
You've got one week. I'll be back at least twice more, to finally try that schnitzel I've had my eye on, and to stuff one more Elephantburger into my face.
