Used to always go for sashimi plates when eating raw fish, but recently discovered kaisendon is the perfect format for me. The rice, the variety, the perfect portions – it just works.Anyone else have a moment when their raw fish preferences completely shifted?

costs really.
when I was a kid I only liked tekkamaki because that was affordable hwere I had access. but later on I lived in Japan and learned I absolutely love chirashizushi. Because it was the affordable food up in Maeda and always safe and never had shrimp (i can’t have that)
Isn’t kaisendon, basically, chirashi sushi with plain rice? I.e., sashimi and other sushi items on top of plain rice?
To me, a kaisendon is just sashimi and other stuff placed on top of white rice. Makes for an easy and affordable meal whenever I see sashimi half-off before the supermarket closes. The ikura and negitoro are rarely discounted though.
Quite simply, my tastes changed when I was exposed to something new. In this case, i encountered kaisendon bowls for the first time after years of eating sashimi and sushi. Now I’m a huge fan. 🙂
