Was so excited when I saw bun mam on Lunch Lady’s menu as it’s quite hard to find in viet restaurants. Ive tried it at p much all of the places it’s avail in Toronto — Pho 90, Pho Hung, Ba Le, Pho Con Bo, Mi Mi, and Thuy Restaurant (where it’s their specialty)
Bun mam is known as “vietnamese seafood gumbo” and it’s a fermented fish broth. If you like funky, smellier foods like stinky tofu, liver, etc. you’ll b a fan of this
It came w the traditional toppings like white fish fillet, pork, shrimp, and eggplant. It also had octopus and viet ham. I was pleasantly surprised by how good the pork belly was — so tender w the perfect crackling crispy crust. The jumbo prawns were also huge and the viet ham was delicious
This was a veryyy good bowl, I wouldnt say it’s the best ive ever had but it is up there and was excellent. The only crit I hv was it was a lil bit too salty — the dish by nature has tons of sodium (way more than pho), but i feel it was too concentrated. I didnt mind tho and watered it down a lil w the tap water given for drink (and the flav was still super strong)
At $26+tax it is also quite steep, and it’s only avail on Thursdays
Also, warning to anyone new to this dish — make sure u hv nothing important to do afterwards, bc ur breath and mouth WILL smell.
justintoronto
the colour of that looks good – i’ll try it when I go.
I’ve tried a couple of other places (pho90, vietnoms, non la, Pho Cuu Long Mien Tay) but they were a miss for me.
