The 23-year-old midfielder is known for his “ice cold” goal celebration, rubbing his arms and puffing his cheeks like he is shivering.

Last year Palmer has submitted an application to trademark the name “Cold Palmer” and his “ice cold” celebration. The trademark covers a wide range of products, including alcohol, clothing, food, toiletries, toys and diet drinks.

A key part of his application to the U.K.’s Intellectual Property Office (IPO) was protection to market alcohol: “Alcoholic beverages; alcoholic fruit drinks; ready-to-drink alcoholic beverages; wines; spirits; liqueurs; alcoholic energy drinks; low-alcohol beverages; excluding wines that comply with the PDO Champagne standard.”

This immediately faced opposition from Château Palmer, a famous winery in Margaux, Bordeaux, France, renowned for products priced at up to $1,000 a bottle. The winery argued the footballer’s trademark could create confusion and damage their image. Both parties will now present their arguments before the IPO, which will make the final ruling.

Château Palmer, founded in 1814 by British army officer Charles Palmer when he purchased the estate. This winery is regarded as one of the most prestigious in the region.

Palmer first unveiled the “ice cold” celebration during Chelsea’s 3-2 win over Luton Town in December 2023, inspired by his former teammate Morgan Rogers. Since moving to Chelsea from Manchester City in 2023, he has scored 43 goals and provided 29 assists in 98 games for Chelsea, helping the club win the UEFA Conference League and the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup.
