Could I double my stack length without creating back pressure? One of my neighbors has been complaining so I’m considering an extension of my smoke stack.

No advice but fuck those neighbours man I live in a townhouse so stacked like sardines and used to run the offset in the yard pretty frequently – never had any complaints. Unless the fires smothered or something there isn’t really that much smoke anyway

I have a smaller offset, but i found that extending my stack helped create a nice air pull and kept my burn cleaner.

Just tell your neighbours to get over it. You arent breaking any laws

Give the neighbor a little taste of what you cook. They will get friendly after that

Invite him over for dinner the next time you cook. He’ll stop complaining.

Tell him to kick rocks then make them an extra rack of ribs next time you fire it up.

So physics says that longer stack = more back pressure. You’d have to make the pipe larger to keep pressure equal.

However, i’m betting that the current height is picked based on whats available, and affordable, not what is optimum.

Plus as others have mentioned, sometimes things get better as you reach above the stagnant pool or air in your apace and reach above the roof.

That smoker is a Mill Scale rip off if i’ve ever seen one. Back pressure is where all the hotspots come from.

Mad respect for using that monster offset in a confined space. You are amongst friends here. We get it

  10. I’m thinking on extending mine with an elbow so I can run it under a pop up tent when it’s raining

  11. Who complains about the smell of a smoker?

Time to put your meat in your neighbor’s mouth OP, show some dominance.

My wife says extend the stack, the longer the better.

Make two big plates for the neighbor. It’s getting mentioned here several times because it works.

For the OP, you’ll need to have it go 100ft in the air before they stop complaining. Then they won’t like the sight of it.

Just talk to em, see if you can sort something out. Bribe them a little with some pulled pork or what have you. But you gotta cook and eat food, if they don’t like the way you live and nobody else has an issue, oh well

I’d get a small fan (battery operated?) and have it blow the smoke where it needs to go

Once it gets fired up .. if it’s running lean enough there would hardly be any smoke just wispy faint light blue smoke that smells wonderful.. if they are mad about that they can pound sand .. otherwise maybe you are not running it right..

Is that a Mill Scale smoker? It’s definitely not a box store unit. That being said, I’m sure they already have it built to spec for best functionality.

Dont alter your rig for a jerk neighbor. Be kind and thoughtful, share your bbq and find another way to make ammends. There will still be smoke even if the stack is higher. In the end unless your hoa forbids a grill or smoker they cant stop you from cooking just try to do it amicably w the neighbor.

I can’t imagine a taller stack is going to change much.

We have a local BBQ joint in the middle of a neighborhood. The town made them build a stack twice the height of the building so the smoke does not cause issues with air quality/be around the homes nearby.

The way they did it was to put a hood above the stack on the smoker, which basically just funnels it into the super long stack without causing cook issues on the smoker.
