$25 for a coravin glass at the wonderful Bonne Chance in Portland (our first time checking out that wine bar- excellent list, people, prices, and food also, fantastic date night. The owner offered us a glass of this off-menu.)

The nose was the kind you want to just huff all night. Incredibly aged; not even a trace of over-oxidization, just rich and broad. We were luxuriating in the vivid caramel apple, perfectly golden toast, cheese danish, flaky pastry, gentle butterscotch, etc, with background notes of lemon curd, sort of a citrus component. Rich and effusive with no excess, dialed-in alcohol (13%), very complex and harmonious.

The palate shared many of the same characteristics of the nose, but the defining feature was the surprising freshness. Really fantastic acidity, right at the perfect level where it cut through the deep flavors and invited sip after sip, but never felt out-of-place, just beautifully integrated. Long, lingering finish.

One of the best sips of aged chard I’ve ever had. Very clearly Californian, just crafted so carefully. I’ll say that the cheese danish note reminded me quite a bit of aged white burgundy though. A comforting hug of a wine.

  2. Great wine, great notes. I had the 2008 earlier this year at the winery and it was great but maybe a little over-oxidization. Happy to see the 2001 drinking so well. Any mayacamas chard I will happily drink up without a second thought
