We like to have fun with our home decor, serveware, dishes, and glasses. But often, our favorite styles come with a hefty price tag. We turn to Walmart, Aldi, and even Dollar Tree for lookalike versions of some of the most gorgeous dishes around. Though there’s one big box shop that gets lost in the shuffle when it comes to knock-out copycats, and that’s Michaels—yes, the craft store.
While the retailer is best known for art supplies, custom framing services, and holiday decor, there’s an entire under-appreciated baking and kitchen department that has everything from basic kitchen tools to organization supplies.
While browsing through Michaels’ Fall Decor section, a collection of dishes instantly stood out. They looked super familiar, and after a little sleuthing, we found that they are a pretty darn good copycat of the famous Mackenzie-Childs dishes that retail for hundreds.
Michaels’ New Checker Ceramic Plates

Michaels’ Checker Ceramic Plates by Ashland feature a checker print that looks hand-painted, much like the iconic Mackenzie-Childs “check” pattern that can be seen on the brand’s signature products. The Michaels’ plates are 8.25 inches in diameter, which is bigger than the Mackenzie-Childs salad plates at 7.5 inches, but smaller than the brand’s dinner plates at 10.5 inches. They are available in yellow, turquoise, and pink.
Mackenzie-Childs’ dinner plates sell for $119.95 for a set of four, and its salad plates sell for $89.95 for a set of four. Michaels’ version, however, sells for $9.99 each, making it less than half the price of the name-brand salad plates and one-third of the price of the dinner plates. It’s also worth noting that Michaels is known for its sales and deals, so you can grab your coupon and get the look for even less.
If you are really into the checkered look, Michaels sells some other fun serveware and decor with the eye-catching pattern. This multicolored Oval Hand-Painted Stoneware Platter with a Check Pattern is also on sale, great for serving up a big meal when hosting, or displaying home decor.
