Escolar. Next time get a bunch of it. It’s extremely tasty! 😋

Three comments and three correct but different replies.

As you’ve probably already determined, the white fish is often marketed as “white tuna” but in reality is known as escolar – a fish famous for causing digestive issue if eaten in large quantities. Consumed in small amounts it’s honestly fine, but not something you want to have a lot of.

Be careful while eating escolar, it can cause… issues

  5. Middle_Macaron1033

Looks like escolar. Pretty bad for you

I know this as Butterfish sushi is sushi made from escolar, a deep-sea fish known for its buttery, creamy texture and rich flavor, but also its high wax ester content, which can cause laxative effects or digestive distress. Also called “white tuna” or “walu,” escolar is sometimes mistakenly identified as other fish, leading to potential health issues for unaware consumers. Escolar (snake mackerel):
Butterfish sushi actually refers to escolar, a fish in the snake mackerel family

  7. It turns your guts into a literal slip’n’slide if you eat enough – escolar.

I love escolar! It’s so buttery and smooth. I never had any digestive issues from it but I did read that it’s extremely high in mercury though.

    Clockwise:

Orange: salmon, white: escolar, pink: hamachi, red: tuna.

aww, when l ordered it, it was called toro…very buttery/fatty…served with a light (i think it was missing garlic)citrus soy sauce(=( not ponzu)…but was delicious. l always expect to have loose(r?) stools when eating raw seafood, for some reason especially true for oysters, but l also tend to take a few extra shots of vodka…just in case…which also results in softer stools…so l didn’t experience anything remarkably crazy afterwards…just softer stools as expected…nothing watery or explosive?

Escolar, sometimes labeled on menus as ‘white tuna’. Dont eat more than a couple of ounces at once or you’ll shit yourself. It is delicious, tho

I simply tank the laxative effect because I love the rich flavor of butter fish

Quickest way to know if your sushi place is legit or not.

White Tuna (ducks the flying chopsticks being thrown at me)

  15. LetsTryLia

It’s white fish, but I call it brown fish because it makes me poop.

  16. Carrotsforfree

I swear this question gets asked weekly if not daily

  17. It’s either escolar (aka butterfish) or albacore (aka white tuna)

  18. Superb-Bus-326

I ate a whole plate of raw escolar and thought I had discovered my new favorite fish!

Then I woke up at 4 am surrounded in my own oily diahrea. Don’t even remember doing it it just slipped out.

  19. Question about the poop fish.
Does it do the same once cooked?
    And does it taste nice

It’s been answered many times, though I’ve also seen this called butterfish.

People saying it’s fine in small quantities? I think it depends on the person .. I had two pieces and well, I’ll spare you the details but it wasn’t pretty 😆

It was absolutely delicious though and I’d probably take the risk again for it.

Buttershart fish would be a more honest name for it…

  21. alargechipmunk

Don’t eat more than 2 pieces of escolar if you don’t want diarrhea.

  22. Patient_Driver8857

My stomach has always been fine even on obscene amounts of white tuna (36+ pieces for AYCA)
