This Betty Crocker recipe from the August 19, 1941 Minneapolis Star-Journal was posted here last week, and I've been planning to bake it ever since. Finally got around to it tonight and it is absolutely delicious. I'll post a link to it below.

Here’s the link to the newspaper page with the recipe. The OP of that post also put in a close-up of the recipe.

I did make a few changes. I used half butter and half shortening (i.e., a quarter-cup of each.) I used 1 and 1/2 cups of sugar instead of two cups. And I used store-bought unsweetened applesauce instead of homemade. For the spices, I used the 1/2 tsp of cinnamon, and then 1 tsp of a baking spice mix from the Spice and Tea Exchange (similar to Penzey’s) which is a blend of cinnamon, clove, allspice , ginger, nutmeg, cardamom and star anise. I often use it in place of cinnamon in recipes; it has a more complex flavor and I highly recommend it for baking!
I have a roughly 8×12″ glass baking dish, so I used that. I baked it for 50 minutes instead of 60, and I think it could have been more like 46 or 48 minutes.
I’m sure tomorrow it will taste even better, as spice cakes do, but warm was heavenly as well!

I’m sure it will taste even better tomorrow as spice cakes often do, but it’s heavenly warm from the oven, too.
This looks terrific!! I used to eat applesauce cake all the time when I was younger. Adding powdered sugar on top is a great idea!! Love this🤩🤩👏👏
