Here’s a copycat recipe for a shelf-stable, just add water tomato sauce mix that you can use as a substitute for Thrive Life’s tomato sauce. Everyone who knows and loves that sauce will eventually need more of it since they’ve closed their doors. My mix is a 1:1 substitution, and I’d suggest that if you want to use it as a dipping sauce or on a pizza, you cook it first. I love it in spaghetti, lasagna, and all my soup recipes as well. I hope this is helpful to you!

Tomato Sauce Mix
yields about 6 servings
(1/4 cup sauce mix = 3/4 cup prepared sauce)
Into a medium bowl add:
3/4 cup FD tomato powder
1/4 cup heavy cream powder
1/4 cup instant milk
2 Tbsp corn starch
2 tsp carrot powder
2 Tbsp sugar (or more or less if you prefer)
2 tsp kosher salt
2 tsp FD Italian seasoning (or a combination of basil, oregano, chives, etc.)
1 tsp onion powder
1 tsp garlic powder
1/2 tsp citric acid, optional
Mix all ingredients and add to a pint jar
oxygen absorber
To Prepare:
For 3/4 cup prepared sauce, add 1/4 cup sauce mix and 3/4 cup water to a sauce pan. Stir well to dissolve any lumps. Simmer for 3-5 mins, whisking constantly. Or just toss some sauce mix into your soup recipe for added flavor and tomato goodness. Yum!
Artisan Bread Mix
yields 4 1-lb loaves or 4 12-in pizza crusts
1 heaping Tbsp yeast
6 1/2 cups AP flour
1 heaping Tbsp kosher salt
Mix well and store in an airtight container
Use before expiration date of the yeast
To Prepare:
Add 3 cups warm water to a large 6-qt container. Add bread mix and stir with a Danish dough whisk or until dough is shaggy and wet with no more pockets of visible flour. Add more water, 1 Tbsp at a time, if necessary. Let rise, covered, at room temp for about 2 hours. Refrigerate dough and use within 2 weeks.
To bake 1 loaf:
With floured hands and kitchen shears, cut off a piece of dough that’s about 1/4 of the entire batch. Set the dough into a bowl of flour and coat all sides. Shape the dough smooth and tuck the folds on the underside. On a piece of parchment paper that’s been sprinkled with cornmeal, place the dough ball smooth side up. Cut several slits with a serrated knife. Let it come to room temp while oven preheats to 425 F with a baking stone in the oven. Not much rise will happen. It will mostly flatten out. Place an empty sheet pan under the baking stone. After about 45 mins of preheating, slide the loaf onto the baking stone and quickly add 1 cup hot water to the pan underneath. Bake for 25-30 mins, removing the parchment paper after about 10 mins. It will rise nicely in the oven. Remove to a wire rack to cool.
This also makes a wonderful pizza crust. Let the dough ball come to temperature in the flour bowl. Then shape into a 12-inch round on a floured surface and place on a pizza peel lined with parchment paper and cornmeal. Par bake if desired. Top the pizza dough with sauce and toppings. Bake at 450 for 10-12 mins or until desired doneness. Remove the parchment paper after about 5 mins to encourage browning on the bottom. Enjoy!

AWESOME…thanks!!
Would powdered coconut milk be a good dairy swap?
π
Have you used Thrive's gluten free flour? Could I make a pizza dough with that?
Cherith, your videos are so well done. Professsional!
This is great! Thanks so much for sharing this.
This is great! Thanks so much for sharing this.

Now that I've done the tomato sauce mix, the Espagnole, the bechamel, and the chicken gravy, I want to conquer a Hollandaise dry mix …. I've tried several versions, but it's failed every single time! And there's a packet mix by Knorr and McCormick, so I know it's possible π Ugh! Y'all let me know what you'd like me to attempt next!π
Thanks Cherith! This is a sauce that is a Staple in my pantry. From one saucy girl to another.! I think the carrot powder is a game changer in this recipe.
Thank you SO much for this! You are a great cook!! Love from OK π
I love your videoβs! I am definitely doing this! Hugs from South Alabamaβ€οΈ
Thank you for coming up with this recipe!! Canβt wait to see what copycat recipe you do next!
ππ Thank you for creating alternatives for us. Much appreciated!
Is there a way you could just ask them for their recipes since they are going out of business?

This is another great video.
I ordered 12 cans of the TL sauce and it came damaged at least 5 cans, and one opened and exploded on all the others. I washed all the lids and wiped all the cans down with wipes the best I could.
I was putting this away for my long term storage.
I will be giving yours a try.
𧑠looking forward to trying this ! Thanks.
Thank God we have you to put your expertise to good use! Thanks for all the time and effort you put in to create this sub for Thrive Life's tomato sauce mix.
Agreed, this is AWESOME! Thanks so much for taking the time to create an alternative to Thrive's product. Would love to use it for a pizza, once I'm ready to fire up the oven again, lol. π π Maybe freeze dried carrots would make a better carrot powder than the dehydrated… I can see where those would turn bitter. π₯π€ When it comes to tomatoes, citric acid is excellent to support safe food preservation. Even a tiny bit is better than nothing. Tomatoes are not as acidic as they once were. Anyway, this recipe will be such a wonderful option. Again, THANK YOU! ππππ
Thank you so much Cherith! Your amazing!ππππ©·
I wonder if beef gelatin can be used instead of starch, and a natural sweetner like monk fruit.
Thanks for sharing these wonderful recipes! Have you developed copycat recipes yet for Thrive Life's Veloute, and its Cheese Sauce?
Yum Thankyou π
I think the color and consistency of your sauce is more appealing than the TL mix. Looking forward to your Hollandaise mix! I've got a stash of Knorr's packets because I believe like butter and bacon, Hollandaise makes everything better! π
You're awesome! I love that you have made copycats of the sauces! β€β€β€
Well done. I didnβt know TL tomato sauce was cooked and then freeze dried. TL tomato sauce looked good but your version looked more vibrant. I love saucy pizza too and yours looks mouthwatering! β€οΈβ€οΈ God bless!
The sauce looks delicious! I too am so sad to see all the TL products go away but YOU are doing an amazing job showcasing alternatives! The pizza looks oh so fabulous!!! YUM!!!
