Durian from Thailand, weird looking, kind of smelly, but surprisingly sweet and creamy to eat.

My wife loves fresh durian. If it wasn’t for the price tag, our home would frequently have that trademark odor of warm garbage.

  2. I’m currently on my first ever trip to Thailand, tried durian and durian ice cream yesterday because I was curious and I can full heartedly say that it is not for me ahaha. I’ve heard it’s an acquired taste but to me it tasted like old gym socks lmao

When I tried it, it was like melon ice cream dusted with asafoetida. Sort of a garlic onion leek hint. I could see it going well in a sweet savory curry.

I’ve never tried it, but it’s frequently for sale at the Asian supermarkets in my neighborhood and to me it smell like sugar syrup mixed with Merbromin (formerly Mercurochrome in the US). The scent hits me as soon as I walk through the doors.

People either love Durian or absolutely hates it. There’s no in between. I once get kicked out of the class for bringing a durian ice cream, idk whats the fuss is about cuz its smells good to me

Kind of smelly is an understatement from what I’ve seen or heard lol

  7. You should try Malaysian durian. Tastes different. Get the full spectrum!

I don’t get the bad smell thing and I also don’t get the flavour.it didn’t taste of anything when I had it 🙂

Those are banned in Thai airports because of the smell. I thought it was exaggerated until I saw Andrew Zimmern almost hurl when he was offered one.

I would have guessed boiled chicken breasts that have started to go a bit funky lol

Yes. Agree this stuff reeks. I personally think it tastes like onions. No me gusta.

I wanted to like it but it gave me onion breath for hours and I think I was sweating the smell out through my pores.

Congratulations, IIRC it has to do with some Rare enzyme shenanigans that allows you to enjoy durian instead of being repulsed by it

All I know is that my grandmother loved it and people would stay far away when she brought it out. Just a little old asian lady laughing at everyone while enjoying her vile fruit.

Not shitty, just foreign and extremely stinky lol

I got to try some a while back and thought it smelled like cat pee and tasted like garlic and pineapple had a baby. It honestly wasn’t as bad as I was expecting it to be.

I know some people just love this stuff, but the one time I tried it I was traumatized by how terrible it was. Sounds dramatic, but it was soooo bad. I almost had to exit the premises entirely to avoid the smell. I’m not sure what type of durian it was though, I’m guessing it was the terrible kind.

My bf brought back durian candies from Taiwan and they were so stinky and tasted like onions. Would love to try the real thing tho

It’s an intense experience, and if you develop a taste for it, which millions of people do, you’ll be willing to spend more money for durian than any other fruit. The global durian market is valued at over $20 billion and is rapidly expanding.

I hated durian the first couple times I tried it but now I get it. It’s got a complex flavor profile, like sipping a top shelf whisky or a nibbling a rare aged cheese. Once you get a taste for it, other fruit will seem bland and boring. It’s probably no coincidence that Southeast Asians also enjoy other very pungent culinary experiences, like fermented fish and shrimp paste.

Does it count as shitty food porn if it’s literally how it looks?

Side note: get in mah belleh.

Honestly it’s the texture I find most off-putting, fatty fruits just don’t compute for me. Fruit should be refreshing

That aside, the taste isn’t anything to write home about and the smell is bad but just not as bad as people say.
