A longtime Downtown Fresno Mediterranean restaurant is closing after more than 40 years. George’s has been in its current Downtown Fresno location since 1986.
The restaurant announced its impending closure on Instagram with the caption “with deepest gratitude – George’s Shish Kebab crew.”
Their last day of business will be this Friday, Aug. 29.
“Since the day we opened, it has been our greatest joy to serve you, your families, and your friends. Over the decades, we’ve celebrated countless birthdays, anniversaries, and everyday meals with you, and we cannot begin to express how much those moments have meant to us,” the Instagram post said.
George’s has been a mainstay in Downtown Fresno since the 1970s when its original owner, George Koroyan, opened near the corner of Ventura Avenue and L Street. It has been located at The Galleria near the Fresno Convention Center since 1986, and has passed hands of ownership as well.
In 2022, longtime Art Imirian put the restaurant up for sale as he prepared to retire. George’s was purchased by Fred Ghiassi in 2024.
Ghiassi also owns Tah Deeg Persian Cuisine in Clovis.
