    It’s a charcoal divider. It’s great for creating a direct and indirect cooking zone. This allows you to sear meat over high, direct heat and then move it to the indirect side to finish cooking. It’s also useful for the Joetisserie, as it lets you create a single hot spot to prevent the food from burning as it rotates.
    When using the divider, always fill the charcoal basket full on the side you plan to use for direct heat. You can simply add another large piece of charcoal on top if the level starts to drop during the cook. Don’t wait for the temperature to decrease before adding more charcoal.

    I thought the same at first, but I use it all the time when I do a rotisserie, and I took all the coals behind that it helps with indirect heat and reducing the flareups
