If you actually want to smoke that, I’d strongly suggest my sous vide method. 24 hours at 155, and then smoke until you are happy with the crust. Chill in between the sous vide and smoker if you want more time for bark formation.

I’d save that to make it like a pot roast in a crock pot and buy a proper brisket for smoking. I think MIL is testing you to see if you’re going to do the correct thing. Haha

Defrost slowly inside of the package. After defrosting remove from the package and place on the counter for 45 minutes. Smoke at 185F for 2-3 hours. As the oven is preheating to 325 you need to remove the small brisket from the smoker and wrap it in foil (peach paper is better but not necessary) Once internal reaches 203f, remove from the oven and place it on the counter for 10-45 minutes
If you add bbq sauce, do not add it until after you wrap it.
