Would you believe me if I told you there’s a Greek island where celebrities sail from next door islands just to have dinner? Where ancient pottery traditions meet molecular gastronomy? And where Sunday lunch involves a village ritual that’s been honored for centuries? I’m talking, of course, about the island of Sifnos, the hidden culinary gem of the Greek island chain we call the Cyclades. Or, if you prefer the Greek pronunciation, the Kiklades. Today, I’m sharing the top three things you absolutely must eat, drink, and do for fun based on my personal experience here. Trust me, by the end of this video, you’ll be checking flights. Let’s start with where to eat, and our first stop completely blew my mind. Omega-3 Fish and Wine Bar in Platis Gialos isn’t your typical Greek taverna. Chef Giorgos Samoilis is a molecular biologist with a doctorate in biochemistry, and he started cooking for friends in Sifnos years before founding Omega-3. The fresh daily catch is transformed into something extraordinary. Having lived in Brazil, the chef’s Latin influence shines through in things like ceviches, but all the dishes, from tempura to risotto to scallops, stay true to their Sifnian roots. And yes, the rumors are true. Tom Hanks really does sail over from his house in Antiparos just to eat here. After dining here myself, I completely understand why. The wine list is expertly curated, as expected, but once the sommelier learned that we lived in Germany previously, he produced a very special unlisted bottle, this Dr. Loosen Knochen Trocken, which paired perfectly with our meal and jabbed me with that note of high acid nostalgia. For our more traditional fine dining vibe, Bostani Bar & Restaurant offers Cycladic cuisine with a view that may stop your breath. We had a table overlooking the sea and the village of Kastro, with the iconic Church of the Seven Martyrs perched on its dramatic peninsula. We started with the dolmas: cuttlefish, smoked pork belly, cabbage, sushi rice, cuttlefish ink, and egg lemon sauce. For mains, we had mustelo, Sifnos’s most iconic meat dish. It can be lamb, but in this preparation, it was goat. The tender meat is washed with red wine, not water, and flavored with fresh dill. It’s then steamed in a special Sifnean clay pot over grapevine twigs. The meat cooks in the wine’s vapor, but never touching the bottom. We also enjoyed the Bostani version of lobster mac and cheese. Calamarata pasta, aged gouda, graviera cheese from Paros, lobster butter, and sprinkled with breadcrumbs flavored with garlic and lemon. We finished strong with a warm butterscotch cookie and hazelnut praline ice cream, paired with our Vin Santo from Santorini. You might think that by changing the venue to a simple humble taberna, we might be stepping down in flavor or enjoyment. You might be wrong. We sat down at O Simos in Kamares, Sifnos’ quaint port, for the real heart of Sifnian cuisine. First, Revithada, the famous Sifnean chickpea stew. This isn’t just any chickpea dish. This is a cultural institution. Every Saturday evening, families prepare their chickpeas in special clay pots called skepastaria. They take them to the village bakery to slow cook overnight in wood-fired ovens. Sunday after church, they collect their perfectly cooked stew for family lunch. It’s a tradition that’s been happening for centuries, and the result is pure magic. Just chickpeas, onions, olive oil, bay leaves, and a good night’s rest. It tastes like the essence of the Mediterranean. We paired it with Gylomeni Manoura a local spicy artisanal cheese made from local goat and sheep’s milk, and aged in wine lees and local herbs. Sitting at O Simos overlooking the crystal clear waters of Kamares Bay, eating these ancient recipes, there’s really no better way to connect with the soul of this island. Now let’s talk about where to drink, because Sifnos has some lovely options. Loggia Wine Bar in Kastro is a local institution known for great flavor. Perched on the southeastern cliff walls overlooking a tiny cove, the atmosphere is sophisticated, yet very simple and uncomplicated. Sit on the steps, sit on the stone wall, or grab a table. Just enjoy. For a uniquely local white wine, try Fùa, made with 100% Assyrtiko grapes using native yeast, no filtration, and no fining, which also makes it vegan. It has all the crisp acidity you’d expect from Assyrtiko, but with the lack of filtration and fining, it has a fuller, more textured mouthfeel that’s absolutely gorgeous. Want a coffee that contends it’s the best of your life? Try the Freddo Cappuccino at Palmira, an all-day kitchen and bar in Platis Gialos. It’s the most iconic beach and cocktail bar in Sifnos. In fact, our Greek neighbors met while they were both working here several years ago, so this was their personal recommendation. The cafe’s design is the perfect combination of clean, bright, inviting, modern Greek Cycladic. Vivid bougainvillea on the whitewashed walls, framed by azure blue skies, earth tones for the furniture, and it’s really hard to beat this beach view. Palmira is also right next to Omega 3, so it’s perfect for pre- or post-dinner drinks. It also offers stellar brunch and recovery fare. Finally, if you’re waiting for a ferry in Kamares, Kyma Beach Bar is a great place to relax and sip something nice. The cocktails are fresh and delicious, and the beer is icy cold in that way that only Greeks can do. Take a seat or recline on these plush beach beds, under a canopy of beautiful tamarisk trees with warm breezes gently stroking the woven chandeliers. Everything about this place says, “Relax. Everything will be alright.” For the fun category, let’s start with pure relaxation. Bostani Spa offers an incredible couples experience with a stunning sea view. I enjoyed a 90-minute herbal myth massage, while my wife enjoyed some of her favorite treatments. Honestly, it was the perfect way to slow down and embrace Greek island time. But to really understand and appreciate Sifnos, you should explore its pottery. Pottery here isn’t just a craft. It’s been a way of life since the early Cycladic period. The island’s refractory clay, formed from weathered schist rock, is perfect for heat-resistant cookware, including the special skepastaria the locals use for chickpea stew. We spent a good amount of time at Peristeriona, a beautiful pottery shop. Its family operated, like all of them. Grandfather and father spinning the clay, grandmother and mother glazing and painting, and the kids working the front of the house. In the ancient days, the pottery shops were inland to mitigate the threat of pirate raids. As security improved, the workshops moved to the coast to facilitate easier trade. So don’t leave Sifnos without a beautiful piece of practical art. We use our pottery all the time. It’s beautiful for holding fruits and vegetables, and we especially use it for baking feta and chickpeas. Finally, don’t miss the Church of the Seven Martyrs in Kastro, especially at sunset. It’s only a few minutes walk from Loggia Wine Bar, and the walk there is an adventure in itself. The footpath narrows with steep cliffs and crashing waves on both sides. The colors at “golden hour” are absolutely magical. It’s just the kind of moment that makes you understand why people fall in love with the Greek islands. Sifnos isn’t just another pretty Greek island, though it certainly is that. It’s a place where ancient traditions live alongside creative innovation, where every meal has a rich backstory, and where you can still experience authentic, Cycladic culture without the insufferable crowds of more well-known islands.
