This delicious COSY Apple Crumble recipe is so easy to whip up for dessert, and today I’m making it on a cold, rainy day so that my family has a warm comforting dessert to come home to.
It freezes well. Just cover and pop into the freezer before cooking so you have a dessert on hand when needed, it’s also very budget friendly when apples are on hand.
Cosy Apple Crumble Recipe:
120g soft butter
1/2 cup white sugar
1 cup oats
1.5 tsp baking powder
1 tsp vanilla essence
1.5 cups plain flour
4 stewed apples or around 450-500g tinned apples.
Mix the crumble topping together and cover the apples,
bake in the oven for 22-25 minutes at 170C or 338F until lovely and golden on top.
As with many of my recipes, make this your pwn, add cinnamon or coconut, extra sugar or even change the fruit to apricots. Yum!
Enjoy,
Happy cooking,
Jamie

Welcome to Eat Homemade. I’m Jamie. Thank you for joining me in my kitchen today. We have got a stormy day. There’s been thunder, lightning, some really heavy hail, and I thought perfect opportunity to just make the house feel really cozy with a beautiful homemade apple crumble. I’ve got some beautiful sweet apples that need to be used today. And I’m just going to do a really easy crunchy top for them. Follow me with my apple crumble because you won’t believe how easy it is to throw this together. You don’t even have to use um fresh apples if you have a tin of apples. Sometimes that’s cheaper and it’s definitely easier if you don’t have access to nice cheap sweet apples. So, let’s get started. So, I’m just starting with 120 g of butter. I’m just going to pop that in the microwave. Excuse me, Millie. in the microwave just so that it’s really nice and soft. Not exactly melted, but just nice soft butter. And then I’m going to peel and chop my apples. So, we save all of the peelings, all of the scraps for the animals. The chickens love this, the goat loves this, even the sheep will get in amongst these scraps as well. But like I said, if you have access to just cheap tins of apples with no additives, that’s perfect to use as well. I always try and keep some of those. If I haven’t got stewed apple ready, I just keep some in my pantry. Makes life just that little bit easier. So, the thunder has been so loud today, it’s been shaking our little house that Millie has had to come and huddle right down by my legs. So, I have to be careful in the kitchen not to trip over her. We usually have a bit of a rule that she’s not allowed right in the kitchen. Um, but you know what it’s like with pets. You break rules all the time, right? So, I’ve got five apples here, but I think I’m just going to use four for the crumble because they are nicesized and then I can put one aside and I’m going to make some like apple cinnamon scrolls with a nice vanilla icing drizzled over the top. So, I’m going to do that probably this afternoon. So, I’ll put that aside for that one. And if you haven’t stewed apples before, they are so easy to do. I just put a little bit of water in the bottom of my pot, slice up my apples, and cook them on a low to medium heat for probably about 15 to 20 minutes until they’re nice and soft. Okay, done. And you can see that I’m not a fussy cook. I like to get things done quickly when I have quite a lot to do. So, there are some little bits of um my goodness, I’ve got a mind blank. a little bit of peel left on these and that’s fine. It doesn’t matter actually. It will make things look a little bit more rustic. So, lid goes on here and like I said, just simmer those on the stove until they’re beautifully stirred. Okay. So, I’ve got my butter. You can see it’s just nicely softened there. Got my wooden spoon. And I’m going to add my sugar. We’re going to make the topping. This is the topping of the crumble. So, while our apples are stewing, we’re just going to pop this together. So you can use any kind of sugar that you’ve got. You could use raw. Sometimes I use raw with a mixture of brown sugar. I’ve just got some plain white sugar. Some vanilla essence. And if everybody else does that, uses the lid of the vanilla essence as your teaspoon. So, I’m giving that a mix. And you can see that it’s creamed. Just a nice soft mixture. Smells so nice. I love the smell of vanilla. So, I’m adding my flour and I’m adding my baking powder. And then also to that I’m going to add my oats. So, I’m using whole grain oats. So, they’re not the rolled ones, but you could use those as well. Now give that a mix together. And this is your mixture. This is exactly how we want it to look. So it’s sort of clumping together. And the vanilla essence will make it into little like almost vanilla shortbread pieces. It’s really yummy. To this, you could also add some shredded coconut. About a/4 to half a cup of shredded coconut as well if you wanted to. I’m just going to leave that out for today and make my usual basic recipe. When your apples are nicely stewed, just drain any excess water out of them. And just with my spoon, I’m going to mash them up a little bit. Not too much because I love it when there’s all the little bits of chunky apple in there. And then I’ve got this dish here that’s oven safe. And I’m going to pop all my apples in here. If you like a sweeter apple or if the apples that you’ve used aren’t so sweet, you can go ahead and also add a tablespoon of brown sugar. But these are lovely sweet apples, so I’m going to leave them exactly as they are. So, just flatten those down a little bit so that they’re relatively even. And now we can add our beautiful vanilla crumb to the top of this. So, this recipe makes lots of crumb for the top, which is really nice. Like, it is a vanilla shortbread biscety b um biscety topping that we’re going to put on. We want to put that all on the top. Every single bit. And like I said, you can add cinnamon to yours. You could add some coconut, whatever you’ve got on hand. And then I’m just going to flatten it down so that it’s not going to cook unevenly. So, it’s nice and even right across. That looks really good. And that goes into an oven for about 22 to 25 minutes at 170°. So, our apple crumble is ready. We can tell because it’s gone beautiful and golden on top. We don’t want it to be too golden. This looks just perfect. You can go ahead and serve it just as it is, but it’s really cozy and comforting to serve it with a little bit of vanilla ice cream or some custard. Um, yeah, your guests will absolutely love this. It is just a really cozy, comforting dessert to have on a cold day or even in summer after a barbecue. So easy because you can whip it up beforehand and then even just reheat it. It smells amazing and it tastes even better.

I used to measure vanilla with the lid, now I just pour it in unless I'm using really expensive stuff.
