Too much cheese not enough sauce? Its an easy mistake to make! Shortcuts can work, namely cooking the cheese a little first and adding the sauce partway through on top. You may think all pizza goes in at the same time but not always! Especially with sauce, cheese, topping heavy pizzas you gotta take some steps at times for it all to cook right.
I’ve worked in a pizza shop and know how to make new york AND chicago pizzas. Chicago pizzas are way harder than new york till you hit the sicilian which are the same level. When I’ve made an amalgamation double decker of a chicago deep dish topped by an upper layer crust of new york pizza I had to go in steps and layers.
This is also why we hated it when you order a crapload of ingredients because it doesn’t cook well and can ruin a pizza. We would cook some on the side to put near the end to not swamp the pizza in grease, veggie water, and other such things. Just some advice to up your pizza game, no hate! Pizza is harder than you’d think and its a great attempt!
Edit: I should add, home ovens don’t cook the same way as nor hit the same ripping hot temps as pizza ovens do so cooking in steps is the best way to go about some pizzas. Home ovens often overcook tops and undercook dough and sauce. It may take longer but its well worth the effort! Also don’t be afraid to cook your pepperoni or sauage a little first and use that oil to line a pizza stone, it adds a nice little flavor to the crust in a home oven. Don’t do this in a normal pizza oven if you don’t want smoke and fire though!

It seems like there wasn’t enough tomato sauce on top.
Deep dish has a longer bake time, which will burn the cheese. The reason the sauce goes on top is to protect the cheese from burning.
This pie is burnt on top because the sauce layer was too thin.
