A beloved east Austin institution has gone dark.

Sam’s BBQ, a fixture on East 12th Street known for its late-night hours and classic no-frills barbecue, has suddenly ceased operations, suggesting an uncertain future. The Austin American-Statesman has reached out to the Sam’s BBQ team for comment, but has not received a response.

“Please know we are working tirelessly behind the scenes to reopen and continue serving the community that means so much to us,” the post read.

The post provided no timeline or details on when the legendary pits might fire up again, but promised, “Be on the lookout because when we are back.. we are going to be SO BACK.”

The ambiguity has fueled concern among regulars who have relied on the restaurant for decades.

For generations, Sam’s BBQ was more than just a place to grab a brisket sandwich. As one of the city’s few remaining Black-owned barbecue spots, it served as a place where history and flavor were passed down through the smoke. Its sudden closure is a stark reminder of the fragile nature of these heritage businesses in a rapidly changing city.

A return to business is hoped for, but for now, the smoker is silent.
