Starting with Michael Mayo’s list of Broward and Palm Beach county restaurants that somehow didn’t get a mention among top Florida establishments this year from the Michelin Guide. Some of the best restaurants in the two counties are not on “foodie bible” Michelin’s list, says Mayo, the former South Florida Sun Sentinel’s food critic and cofounder and current administrator of the 213,000-plus member “Let’s Eat, South Florida” Facebook Group.

“When it comes to stars, Michelin’s inspectors seem to love small places with fancy tasting menus that embody what I call the three P’s: Pricey, pretentious and precious,” says Mayo, who also hosts “Mike Mayo’s Lunchbox” podcast. “Salons where tweezer-placed microgreens balance just so on top of fermented foams and 28-ingredient reductions. Hence, lots of chef’s counters and expensive omakase dens [make the list].

“I prefer places that warm the soul,” Mayo says.

What follows is his list of 17 Broward and Palm Beach county restaurants he thinks do that — and deserve a lot more attention than they’re getting now.

“There’s more on the plate for Michelin inspectors to consider for the 2026 guide,” Mayo says, “with two notable new Fort Lauderdale restaurants arriving on the scene in recent months, Calusso [at Pier Sixty-Six] and Ukiah Japanese Smokehouse (a dish from which graces the cover of the September issue).”

Does the fault lie within ourselves or the stars? Read Mayo’s story — and talk about it later over dinner.
