A tanker truck carrying thousands of gallons of waste cooking oil was involved in a rollover crash on Interstate 91 in Rocky Hill on Friday.

The Rocky Hill Fire Department was dispatched to I-91 South between Exits 22 and 23 around 11:23 a.m. on Friday for the report of a motor vehicle crash involving a tanker truck that had rolled over and was leaking fluids, according to fire officials.

The fire department located a truck that was loaded with 2,000 gallons of waste cooking oil on its side next to the highway. Fire officials said the truck was leaking a small amount of the waste oil and also had a small hole in its fuel tank that was leaking diesel fuel.

The truck driver self-extricated from the vehicle and was suffering from non-life-threatening injuries, according to fire officials.

Fire officials shut down the right and breakdown lanes on I-91 South during the cleanup.

“The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection was notified and an Incident Action Plan was developed,” fire officials said. “Additional notification was made to the Department of Transportation to respond with crash trucks. On the arrival of the DOT vehicles, the RHFD cleared the scene at 12:22 p.m.”

According to fire officials, there were no injuries to the any of the first responders.

Fire officials also noted that there was no environmental impact.
